Pipe Character in Vmware

How do i get the pipe character to work under vmware running centos ive installed the vmware tools but doesnt work.
 
Mine works out of the box...

Are you sure that your keyboard is set to the proper settings.
 
So do all my installations. Are you sure that your guest installation has the correct regional settings?

It does because whenever i putty to it the pipe character works. however in vmware i get > instead of |
 
What I meant is that your guest operating system (running on vmware) is not configured correctly.

Putty is probably running on the host OS, ,which is correctly configured.

ok i get it... is there a command in linux to reconfigure the keyboard?
 
ok i fixed it thanks for your help i type system-config-keyboard command in a shell prompt and switched it.
