Pings to gateway (netscreen) =1

Hi everyone i have posted a few wierd networking problems that we are having.
We have 12 switches connected to one core switch and a netscreen router/firewall. Ip range is 10.158.0.1 - 10.158.2.254 subnet 255.255.248.0

When i ping a server i get <1 which is good..but when i ping the netscreen 10.158.0.1 i get first reply =random number and the second-forth =1. does anyone have any suggestions on this would be great.

Also, i see a lot of traffic to 10.158.7.255
