Hi Guys,

I am running MS Virtual PC with windows 98 from WIN XP Pro host.

I am looking for some details to ping windows 98 to windows xp.

Do i need to NICs one for 98 one for xp?
Is it possible at all?

i have set the IPs etc however the pining is getting timed out.

What are the things i need to consider?

Regards

Hi Linnery,

Thanks for the reply ...
however what do you really mean by "Make sure the Virtual Machine Network Services is ticked in the LAN Properties."

can you please add some details?

In XP right-click on your LAN icon in the Notification Area and open Network Connections.

Right-click on the Local Area Connection icon (in Network Connections) and select Properties.

There should be a list of "This connection uses the following items", look in there.

Thanks Linney,

Yes that is definitely done. Still same issue. It is not pinging at all ...

what other options possible?
Is VMware better than MVP?

Have you got a Network Connection icon in the Notification Area (near the clock) of your XP Host machine, is there a red X on this icon?

Are there any other (non-virtual) computers connected to the XP Host?

In the settings for the 98 VM what have you listed under Networking for such things as "Number of Network Adapters" and "Adapter 1: to :4"?

See "Managing network adapter availability for virtual machines" in Virtual Machine Help.

In the same section do you have "Shared Folders" and do you have a folder mapped as a drive on the XP machine and can you access this shared folder in XP from 98?

See "Managing shared folders for virtual machines" in Virtual Machine Help.

Also when you browse via the "Shared Folder....." tab do you see the XP machine folders?

You have to highlight the various settings to bring up the options in the right-pane of the Settings window.

Do you have any Firewall in 98 and/or XP that is preventing access?

I have never tried any other VM software so I can't advise you on that? I do have several Microsoft Virtual Machines on my XP Host and they can chat merrily away with the XP Host, each other VM and with other non-virtual computers in my small LAN.

These are just general articles about Networking.
