This has been bugging me for a couple months now and I can't seem to figure it out. Here is the scenario...

Netgear WGR614v2 configured with DHCP enabled.

I will label each PC as P(n)
Current IP status of each PC in my house:
P1: Mac (wireless): 192.168.0.2
P2: WinXP Pro (wired)(upstairs): 192.168.0.3
P3: WinXP Home (wireless): 192.168.0.4
P4: WinXP Pro (wired) (downstairs): 192.168.0.5

My problem is... I can't ping from P2 to P3 or P3 to P2, but both can ping the other 2 computers.

disable firewall (xp).
workgroup settings?
post ipconfig /all

The firewall is disabled
I believe all my workgroups are the default "workgroup", but that shouldn't make any difference anyway; I still should be able to ping them if they were on a different workgroup.

IPCONFIG /ALL displays this from one of my PCs

I have a similar problem with two machines connected through a hub, both on the same subnet and within one octet of each other, one pings and gets replies no problem, the other pings, but gets no replies, both running W2K pro. Any other machine attached also pings and gets replies OK.
Obvious choice was a Bad NIC, so tried several types of NIC in addition to the on board one. Reflashed the BIOS to the latest release for each MOBO and still with the same problem.

Tried connecting them by a direct x-over cable, still no luck. Its really weird, so have given up now, but still curious

Helps if they all have the same username and password.

If you do not like my post feel free to point out your opinion or my errors.

I would try a single cross over cable 1st P1--P4 bothway (checks cable) then P1--P2, both way P3-- p4, then if that works try P2--P3 bothways if this does work Go back to straight cables through the Hub/ Switch.starting with P1--P2,Then P1--P3 etc.

To see is to know to know is to see.
Cheers Brian

Can you answer the following.
What can P1 ping
What can P2 ping etc
Can they ping themselves?
Can they all ping the gateway?
What message do you get from the ping, time out, net unreachable etc.
Check that all you subnet masks are class c (255.255.255.0)
Check that the default GW is the same on all.
Your Home XP also appear to be providing WINS, is this correct?
Check for any host entries.

You do not have a WINS server. You also have nothing on subnet 192.168.1.x
Remove the definition in TCP/IP Properties, Advanced, WINS tab.

With a node type of 8, "Hybrid" in your IPCONFIG listing, it is attempting name resolution on a non-existent WINS server.

bcastner,
I use Cisco's VPN client to connect into my office which is on the 192.168.1.x range of addresses and we have a WINS server there that I use to map drives from home.

StuReeves,
I don't know how to ping on a mac
P2 can ping P1, P4 and itself
They can all ping the gateway
When I try pinging the P2 to P3 or P3 to P2, I get "Request timed out."
All my subnet masks are 255.255.255.0
The gateway is configured as a DHCP server so all PCs are configured to "automatic"
All of my PCs connect into my office via Cisco's VPN client software and I map drives from home; that is the reason I use WINS and there are a few host entries.

Ask Cisco, as there are problems with ICMP traffic over their VPN client.

but I am not connected into my office when I am pinging the other PCs.

Your router:

Did you configure your router with the MAC address of either of the two computers that can't ping each other? ..:) (most routers have a MAC cloning function)

Good luck!
Chris

How would configuring my router's MAC address as my PC's MAC address fix the problem? I can't have two devices on the network with the same MAC address, can I?

<><

no exactly.. you *don't* want that. I just figured i'd ask if you had already done that because it could have been a problem if you did :)

Good luck!
Chris
