ping sitename works but cannot surf in IE

hardware :

A laptop with winXPpro with a netgear wireless PCMCIA connects to desktop with winXPpro with wireless USB antenna & UTP to soho firewall => cable modem

problem :
-------
the desktop works fine (surf and email ... etc) Internet connection sharing is enabled on the UTP connection
(the laptop connects to the wireless USB antenna)

but the laptop can only ping websites on their names (e.g. ping

http://www.google.be)

gives a nice reply with IP etc.
but if you type in

http://www.google.be

in IE it doesn't work
with or without proxy ... nothing seems to work

so if ping works and you can resolve DNS request but cannot surf ??? what is wron

Alternatively is it possible to connect the laptop straight to the firewall, to stop the desktop acting as a proxy server for the laptop?

I haven't checked this but i really see him search the site ... and then stall so I guess
the little vink (offline work) is turned off

I need the desktop to work with ICS since the wireless adapter is a usb antenna that can't be plugged into a firewall or modem ... just into the computer

alternatively I can install wingate 5 but when I try this, the computer says I have to turn off ICS and the personal firewall before I can install this ... but it IS turned off ...
any tips on that ?

also, it seems you cannont UNINSTALL TCP IP you can add IPv6 or switch it off but really "remove" is not an option.
then how can you reinstall the tcp ip stack ?

Just a quick thought: If you have a hardware SOHO firewall, the only reason a software firewall would be installed on the desktop was to stop dodgy outgoing software), so my suggestion would be to see if this could be turned off - and remember that XP has its own software firewall as well as any other you may have installed.
If this is the case I would check the firewall settings to ensure that it will permit connections to external sites other than pings from the wireless connection.

As far as I can see all the soft firewalls are turned off, with internet connection sharing you can tick different services that are allowed through the ICS connection, I have ticked them all !

I will recheck this ...

the only thing that can be a problem is my installation of the checkpoint VPN-1 client software that mayby blocks outgoing internet access ... when I boot this software is loaded, I exit the software before using ICS but it doesn't work ...

the problem is very strange ... you can ping, resolve ... ip forwarding works ... so ICS does the job ... only when surfing in IE the websites aren't comming through

I guess it's just crappy windows ICS ....

PS just for the record, I tried the laptop at work on a watchguard wireless soho station and I was up and surfing in secondss .... so it is definitly something within the ICS of my desktop

Some ISP's do not allow the use of their connection via ICS or other sharing i.e. Proxies without some jiggling about to fool them. One that springs to mind is BT Broadband. If you wish to share the connection you have to upgrade to their Business Broadband. However you can get connection sharing to work. Check with your ISP.

You are right ... also my cable ISP doesn't allow multiple IP users when you have a home internet account

BUT i am behind a watchguard soho firewall that does NAT so my ISP just sees one IP (the IP of my firewall) so their unable to see past this point

nevertheless this is an issue you should always keep in mind

check the mtu settings for the laptop.. I had the same problem and had to download tcp doctor. Download this file

open the command prompt from the start menu and run this command..

ping -l 1584 -f www.google.se

The reply will most likely be "Packet needs to be fragmented but DF set". Now pretty much work down in numbers until you find the highest number that receives a successful reply.

for instance I had to get down to 1452 before it would work:

ping -l 1452 -f www.google.se

run the downloaded program, select the network adapter on the laptop and set the mtu to whatever number you received a successful reply on. There may be multiple entries in the list, if so, repeat the process.

Restart the computer and try it.

This has worked on situations simlar to yours. If all else fails, you might look into this:

"1. Make sure you have your OS CD or the correct .CAB files available for the particular version of 98/98se/ME.

2. Remove ALL instances of TCP/IP from Network Properties. DO NOT reboot when prompted to do so.

3. Delete the following registry keys:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\WinSock2

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VXD\AFVXD

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\DHCP

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\DHCPOptions

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\MSTCP

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\Winsock

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\Winsock2


4. Reboot.
5. Reinstall TCP/IP.
6. Reboot."

if this is the case how can you ever reinstall your complete TCP/IP stack, XP doesn't let you touch it ... have you also seen this ?

you already checked (in IE) tools, internet options, connections, LAN settings, and checked automatically detect?

it's either a problem with xp's firewall or IE, since you can connect outside of IE.
