I have seen at least one thread on this but there was no resolution and it appeared dead.

Hardware:
2Wire 1000HW Modem/Router

Situation:
I have 6 computers, 4 laptops and 2 desktops. All my laptops can connect to the gateway wirelessly and browse the internet perfectly (I am doing so now). My desktops however are connected with a hardwire and they can PING by IP and NAME but they can NOT browse the internet.

Additionally, if I turn off one of my laptop's wifis and connect the hardwire, the laptop suffers the same fate, ping no browse.

Finally, I have a Linksys Wireless Game Adapter I use for game consoles. When I connect that and plug it in to one of my desktops, boom, I can browse the internet. So this elimates the network card of the comptures and points to something between the card and router.

I use a Netgear 4 port hub to expand my connections but I have gone all the way down to 2Wire -> computer (with a fresh cable I know works) and I still cannot browse.

This all points to the Router itself.

What could be wrong with the Router that the hardwire can ping but not browse?

Also, the desktops can see all the other computers with "net view", but they cannot connect.

Open a command prompt and post the output from these commands, for one computer that works fine wireless but not wired. Do it twice (working and non-working).

Hmmm, I'm grasping a bit now, check your windows firewall settings

See if it's enabled for wired but not wireless, if so, try disabling it temporarily.

Or if you're using 3rd party software with a Firewall, try disabling it temporarily, again just to see if it's affecting one interface but not the other.

You also shouldn't rule out malware yet. Problem is AV software is having a harder time finding infections because of all the rootkits. Try downloading the old sysinternals.com RootKitRevealer (
It takes some interpretation, but we can try to help if you post the results from that.

Interesting...so you can ping wired, but not browse? Does it completely time out? Can you ftp anywhere? Is this adsl? If it is adsl, then set the MTU from 1500 to 1492. Does this thing have different NAT modes? Make sure these sort of profiles in the router match between wired and wireless connections. Hell, if I were you I'd get a Cisco (NOT a LinkSys Cisco wannabe!), but that's just me...

Burt

Agree on possible MTU issue. But I pushed it down the decison tree because he didn't say a web page partially loads and then hangs. That's the main symptom I look for with blunt MTU issues, ie not tuning for performance but rather basic functionality.

Thinking about the http request. Very small packet, not likely to require fragmentation. The server http response can be widely variable in size and could allow fragmentation. The main issue here is ICMP getting blocked somewhere preventing Path MTU discovery. I'm not sure we're there yet.

OP, do you have a website you visit often? You can rule IE/Firefox etc... by opening a command prompt and try telneting to port 80, then issue a get request like so:

c:>\ telnet 80
Get /

If you get back HTML code, we can start to narrow things down a bit more. If you don't it could just be the site is looking for more than a simple get request and it's not worth trying to figure out what to type. Move to a different site (I have a site responding on port 80 that's not even started but supports what I'm recommending). If you link to me on linked-in, I will accept and then send you more info privately.

Well, I was ruling out firewall because wireless connects just fine. I also was curious about ftp...

Burt

I'd be willing to bet that it's a setting in the router, like something that makes a stateful inspection of packets for wired, but not wireless...some goofy crap like that.

Burt

Well thank you to all who have contributed. I have tried all the suggestions to no avail and I finally came to the conclusion I had suspected all along and that is that the router is f'ed up. This is supported by the fact that it worked for a long time, stopped working, started working again (no changes on my part) and then stopped again.

I've had the 2Wire 1000HW for 6 years and suspected that it simply had over stayed its welcome. I would hope they would last longer than that but oh well.

To put this to the test, I decided to go buy a new 2Wire from Best Buy and try it out. My plan was if it still did not work, then I have problems on my computers and I would simply return it. But if it did work, then the problem was with the old router.

The end of the story is this: The new router works perfectly and as excpected with no changes to any computers.

I wish I understood more WHY the old one did not work, but I simply ran out of patience (as did my wife given all the time I was spending on it).

Thanks again. Great Forum. I will be back...

One of the biggest things with those routers like that is FIRMWARE! I wish you hadn't done that yet! But, it is only, what...50 bucks? I understand...but for ships and grins (Admin---I said S-H-I-P-S), can you try downloading and installing the latest firmware to see if that takes care of it? You can still return the new one (though I would just keep it and sell the old one on Ebay for $20, if firmware fixes it).

Burt

I tried to go down that path in the beginning but I could not find an updated version anywhere. All indications were that I had the latest for that model.

Bottom line is I needed to get back on-line with all computers since I use my home as an office and I need to be able to connect seemlessly to do my job. I get a nice hourly wage and the number of hours I was spending on this just didn't make sense even when you factor in my geek side that likes to play around with this stuff.

I appreciate all the help and I wish I could have found a resolution.

Oh, sure. In that case, then yes. I did not know that you had tried firmware. I don't think the thing's even heavy enough for a boat anchor...
