Hi All,

I am doing some development on my notebook. I have an external 2.5' hdd that is used for this development. I have to constantly plug out this hdd and plug in to another machine for this project. I know some may wonder why do I need to plug out the physical hdd, just take it as this is the only way for me to do stuffs. One day when I plug out the hdd, I found that one pin, I am not sure the pin number but it is either the 1st pin or the last pin since it is located at the corner, is broken. I still can read the hdd from my notebook in my plug this hdd into my external usb hdd case. The question is, will this broken pin has any effect? Is it worthwhile to send this hdd to repair, I mean to fix the pin?

By the way, this hdd is IBM Travelstar.

Thank you.

Lets hope its pin 44 that is broke (or 43).

Check against this layouts (hope i got i aligned right)

Note:
'O' designates an output from the Drive.
'I' designates an input to the Drive.
'I/O' designates an input/output common.
'PWR' designates a power supply to the Drive.
'(Resv)' designates reserved pins which must be left unconnected.
Note: There are two input pins for +5 V power supply, '+5 V LOGIC'
and '+5 V MOTOR', '+5 V LOGIC' is connected to the internal logic circuit
and '+5 V MOTOR' is connected to the spindle motor and motor driver.
It is possible to turn on and off '+5 V LOGIC' by an external switch
circuit to reduce power consumption to the least possible. In this mode,
a voltage drop out due to the motor spin up current can be reduced by
connecting '+5 V MOTOR' line into the system power source directly.

Thanks Syar for such a detailed information, I am very appreciated. However, I am not too sure which pin did I break. Hmm how shall I describe it? Ok, let's say I am holding the hdd with the pins pointing to my face and the ibm label facing up, it looks like something below:
/ / /
/ I B M T R A V E L S T A R / /
/ / /
--------------------------------------------------- /
|o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o x o o | /
|o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o |/
---------------------------------------------------
The pin labeled x is broken, so what pin number is this pin?

Thanks again for all replies

That would be pin 1 .
Hdreset in drive .
Since this only goes to ground in the ide motherboard
connector i dont think it should be a problem.

Thanks a lot again syar. This is a great relief for me! :)

Right,

I bought a hd off ebay to fit into my laptop I jsut got handeed down, but while putting it in a couple of the pins bent (1 and 2).

while straightening them out, pin 2 broke off.

Is all lost, or can I just jury-rigg some kind of connector to pin 1? If so, any suggestions on how to do this?

Also, Pin 1 bent so There might be a danger of it coming off inside the laptop, at which point it would be pretty much impossible to put anything else in, so would it be better to get a wire to some other ground, like 19, 22 etc.

Perhaps I should give up and go buy a new replacement?
