Pictures on sharepoit 1

I hope this is easy I would like to add pictures of each employee on their profile page and I've already figured how to do this, the problem is I dont want to store all the pictures on the sharepoint site (theres a lot and I'm scared of the total size this will take up in the database). So my questions is - Is there a way to link to these pictures from a network drive? or what other way is there apart from pointing to a url?

Try using the format file:///<driveletter>:\<user>.jpg I just tested it here seems to work OK.

PS: I hate stating the obvious but just in case - all users would need that drive mapped with read access to the folder you store it in.
