Can we start a post of pics of wiring jobs that we have done that we might be exceptionally proud of.
I've seen some good ones and some really bad ones. We've just started taking pictures of them, so I dont have any that I'm real proud of, but I'm sure you guys do.

I'd love to see some of y'all handy work.

If this has been done before, I apologize.

My boss keeps pictures of one of my "specials" just to show new guys what not to do.

I think it was the duct tape along the ceiling that really had him laughing.

But, gosh darnit, they got their signal!

(I still think I was justified - I was sent 3 hours drive away to get a laboratory machine up and running - in a building that was gonna be torn down in 2 weeks as they were building a brand new facility. These guys needed this equipment to talk to the pc on the other side of the building and I just didn't see the point of running cable 150 feet through ATTIC space (no drop ceiling) in JULY in FLORIDA for 2 weeks at most!)

But boss just won't let it go. That was like 4 years ago.

This is some of of networking groups work that I fixed.

These are the ones I like to do. You won't get bored doing these.

The networking group here started it out with amphinal cable to 66 blocks. They were also using the Cabletron hubs. We have been converting these for quite a while now to patch panels and Cisco switches. The older connections were setup on back boards, so we get the clean all that up at once. The only pain is knocking down that many connections during the day, so we do them one at a time.

Nice job... :)

I see that you posted the equipment on the left wall. How does the "straight ahead" view now look vs the original pic?

It looks a little better. The floor needs new tile, but I am the phoneman...

Thanks Dexman. I try.

Unfortunately most of the older buildings here were not designed for networking, so like most people they through the networking in the telecomm closets. It has snowballed and no more space is in site. I do get to lay out the new buildings with the architect and that makes it easier to build something decent with room for growth.

Here is a pic of one of my new buildings closets. The building is 150,000 square feet with 2 closets per floor and a Cisco 6500 series router in the 7th or main equipment room. I have approximately 2100 telephone/network connections just in this one building. This closet has around 250 network connections and a 200 pair main feed for telephones which you will see in the back ground. I also have a 12 strand single mode fiber to all the equpiment rooms from the main equipment room.

I do not have pictures of this, so you have to do your best to imagine this nightmare...

In addition to our corporate office, we own a fairly good-sized warehouse.

In one corner, in a "cage" is the demarc. In it are at least a dozen punch-blocks (with wires that go throughout the entire facility) & misc telco equipment from pervious tenants.

Around 300 feet away is another area, where some previous tenants had kept their phone system, etc. There are at least 1 dozen punch-blocks there, too, and is almost as bad as "the ncage".

Until recently, this is where we also kept our key phone system.

A few years back, there was a whole group of computers that "stopped working". They were all connected via a hub. We in IT thought that the hub was attached to a home-run -- or at worst, 1 other switch, and then a home-run.

People at our warehouse hardly ever used to notify us when they were moving equipment -- we usually only found out about it when there was an issue.

Two of my coworkers were sent down there to troubleshoot the problem. What they discovered was so mind-boggling that I can't even begin to describe it, but I'll try.

From the "cage", there wasa cat-5 cable running into a switch in the other telecom area. From there, it went into another switch. From there, it went back to around 50 feet from the "cage", into a hub, then into another hub, and finally into another hub. So, there was 1 switch, and 3 hubs involved!

But that isn't the best part of it... in addition to the switch & hubs, the cat 5 cable was SPLICED -- in 3 different spots, and taped with electrical tape!

It took my co-workers 2 days to discover the 4th hub, and track down the 3rd splice!

Furthermore, a few months back, I moved our key phone system to the "cage" area. A few months later, I started ripping out some of the old wiring... there was (IS) a cat-5 connection that went into a punch-block where the phone system perviously was...

We still have a lot of work to down there, but unfortunately we don't have the time or resource to rip out all unused equipment & properly wire the building... hence, I marvel when I see pictures of jobs that are done right... :)

I only wish I could tell you that all my closets looks that good lol. I don't think I have anything quite as bad as you discribed (in fact I am sure of it) we do have good ones and bad ones.

I have one across the hall from my office that we are doing right now. I will send you some pics of that . UGLLLLLLYYY

As they say Pictures are worth a thousand words. Thanks for the before and after pictures.

How do make the pics part of the response?

I had to set up a website (it's free) that you can point someone to. Then you put in the URL (and post it as

(no line breaks)

It took me a while to fiqure it out too. LOL.

Not your typical telco room nor the biggest prettiest job but a good before and after picture.
This is a large converted 150+ year old house for a small office. Everything got installed on a basement ledge because that is where the DSL came in. I was able to take over an office closet and put in a small rack. There are four drops at every station. Two of the drops (black and blue patch cables) at each station are the main network, the third (red) is a secondary network for building customer computers on a different IP scheme with a seperate Gateway, and the fourth (yellow) is dedicated for Ghosting computers and other misc in house stuff.
Don't make fun, I worked with it the best I could, given the little corner closet.

100% better DTSMAN. It looks like someone cared what it looked like on the after pics.

You can put
at the end and post your pics. They do want them to be under 400 pixels wide.
