Photoshop 6.0 recommends setting it’s “primary scratch file ” to be a on a different volume than the Windows primary paging file. Preferably on a different physical drive.
How do you do that?

The first step is to add another internal hard drive (not a new partition on your existing drive).

The in Photoshop, EDIT menu -> PREFERENCES -> SCRATCHDISK

If adding an internal drive isn't an option (e.g., no room in the case), you can also add a fast external drive connected via FireWire or USB-2 (don't use a USB-1 drive, data transfer is too slow). The transfer rate to the external drive may not be quite as fast as to a second internal drive, but it's definitely better than using a partition on the same drive you use for system and data.

If in fact your ONLY drive has enough space and you keep it de-fragged and clean you shouldn't have a problem leaving it on the ONLY drive.

I believe It simply runs more efficiently on a separate drive.
