Photoshop window closes

Hi there...
After days of not knowing what to do next. I found this forum and am hoping someone can help.
When I open photoshop7 the screen comes up...looks like its doing the loading...then GONE...the whole window closes. And Im looking at my desk top again.
I've tried to uninstall and reinstall. I've tried restore to a past date. I'm at a total lost. I'm on winXP.
Thanks for any ideas you may have to help.

Delete your photoshop prefs file.

Open photoshop and immediately click CTRL + Alt + Shift (PC). Say yes when the box opos up that asks do you want to delete the prefs. The timing is tricky, you might have to try this a few times to getthe box.

I saw that suggested in a few other threads, and have tried that many times. I dont get a box.
Yesterday it gave me a driver error. But I have not seen it again?

ok I spoke too soon I gave it one more try and FINALLY got that option. It then told me the following.

You currently have adobe photoshop's primary scratch and windows primary page file on the same volume. It is recommened that you set adobe photoshop primary scratch volume to be on a different volume. Different physical drive.

now what?

You can safely ignore that message.


It is simply a statement of fact, and a good recommendation if you have 2 hard drives in your machine. If you do have 2 hard drives, let me know and I will explain how to set your scratch to another drive.

Thank you for the offer! I do have two hard drives. But I think I'm gonna pass on moving it for now.
Photoshop is now up and running for me again. ( dont think I'll ever close the program ...just in case..lol)
Really though, what was the hang up that I had to clear out the pref? And how often does that happen.
I've used ps5 for years and ps7 for a few months, and havent had this issue before.
Now that my blood pressure is back down i can get back to work. Thanks again for the help

The prefs file is constantly written to every time you use PS, and it is prone to being corrupted. Simply deleting it causes PS to create a new one when you run the app.

If you have 2 hard drives, noving the scratch to the other drive can make photoshop run more efficiently.

Hi all,

I'm late on this thread, but am interested in knowing how moving the 'scratch volume' is done. I have a slave drive to move it onto, but wondered how much space the volume would take up beforehand if anyone knows. Might need to clean the drive up a bit first if it's too large or expands any. Any advise or info in this area would be greatly appreciated!

You go to your Prefernces, and there is an option for Scratch Disks... it will point to c:\... change it to your next drive designation.


There is still some debate as to whether having the scratch on a different drive really does make any noticeable improvement.

I'm totally new at using Photoshop, but after looking high and low for this option in my system device manager, realized that you meant I should look in Photoshop's preferences. Had to laugh about it once I realized this.

Thanks for advising that it isn't necessarily an improvement. I'll change it only if this setting presents a problem in the future.
