Photoshop not responding.... 1

I'm using PhotoShop 5.5 (can't afford upgrade).

When I start the program, the main window with the gray background appears, but none of the tool bars, palettes, etc. show, even after letting it sit for a while.

I remember this happening before, and the fix was to delete one settings file, but I don't remember where it was located.

Ring a bell with anyone?

'tab' key will hide/show palettes; tried that? Doesn't sound like it's that easy based on how you fixed it before...

Worth a shot, but it didn't help. Still no palettes and when I close with the [x] button, I get the "Photoshop is not responding" message.

Guess I get to search for files modified yesterday....

Hi

I would just uninstall and reinstall Photoshop.
That usually gets rid of problems like this.

Something is screwed up some place but it's easier to start over then to try and track it down.

Maybe your preferences need to be reset to their install state, they sometimes get "hosed" and strange happen.

While holding down the [Ctrl Alt Shift ] keys, Start > All Programs > Photoshop.

A MessageBox will ask "Delete the Adobe Photoshop Settings File" to which you answer Yes.

The Preferences file will be rebuilt and hopefully your problem is fixed.

Mike, I know for a fact that people have done that with 5.5, and it didn't fix the problem. Otherwise, I'd have done it already.

Sam, you're probably on the right track, but I just tried your trick with the same result. I'm running Windows XP and PhotoShop 5.5. I did not get that dialog, so either that trick doesn't work with my configuration or the snafu is happening before the dialog would appear. No, I can't afford to upgrade PhotoShop!

You might think about getting Photoshop Elements.
It can be had for under $100 and will be much more advanced then your old Photoshop.

Sam, that fixed it! (Or maybe it just didn't like the low res setting on my desktop.)

Mike, even $100 is not in the budget. Repair guy sez the motherboard is gonna fry, so I need to save for that eventuality...

I'd question the services and advice of a repair guy that can predict that your motherboard is going to fry.

The video card already had fried in such a way that I could tell it was the video card before I took it in and not a virus, the repair guy's favorite diagnosis; apparently most of his customers click on anything and everything willy-nilly. He replaced the video card and naturally, did a virus/malware scan and much to his surprise -- nada!

I've moved all remaining important files off C: -- I moved My Documents years ago, but I have a nasty tendency to save files to Desktop instead of My Documents. I'm saving for a new motherboard and memory too.

Worst case, the motherboard fries and my files are safe and I have the money for a new motherboard.

Best case, the motherboard hangs in there for some time, my files are safe, and I have extra money.

So how's his advice bad?
