Yesterday I had problems running photoshop 7 on my laptop which is runnin winxp pro. The program starts to load and then completely crashes. Shuts down. No real error message other than it mentions scratch disk is on the same volume. This crash happens after it is reading all my fonts. I wonder if a bad font is causing this as I was adding fonts the other day. Appreciate all ideas. I already uninstalled and reinstalled several times with no luck.

Hi,

I had this same problem with Windows 2000 Pro, it would get to the fonts, then freeze for a sec then say that Photoshop had caused an unknown error ad then it just quit.

Prior to that happening I had just installed 800+ fonts that had saved from when I was using Win ME and b/c I didn't know what the default fonts for Win2k were I ended up formatting my computer and then didn't install as many fonts.

Your best option would be to find out what the default fonts are that are insalled win XP then delete all your others and see if that works. If it does work then start to put in your other fonts, but do it slowly so as to narrow down a possibly corrupt font. The other reason is that you maybe have too many fonts installed and you need to reduce them down. When photoshop starts it goes to your fonts folder and loads every font you have on your system and Photoshop can't handle a large ammount of fonts sometimes, depending on the O.S.

Reduce your fonts and that should do the trick.

Hope this helps!

Just a guess but to add to Nate's reply could it be a problem with not enough memory?

Have you "stopped" all other programs and tried to run PShop alone?

Try resetting your preferences. When launching photoshop, hold down ctrl-alt-shift.

Finally got this to run. 10 reinstalls, font changes nothing worked until I deleted and reset preferences. I cant understand that when I uninstalled the pref file was still somewhere on the hard drive causing all these problems.

It's still freeze photoshop 7.0.1 and reboot my computer without warning. I deleted and create a new preferences serveral times.

Finally, it works again. For me it's because Extension Folder.
After I deleted 3 files in this folder, every things go smooth.
And I will find those new ones later.

hi again,
the main problem is only mmxcore.8bx.
but my premiere can detect mmx and run fine.

I'm having the same problem . I loaded up fonts in the Windows/Font folder and all works well with Acrobat/IE6/Word etc. When I load up PS7 it runs right up till it hits the loading of the fonts then says there's an error on the disc or the software and that's it. I followed your instructions and emptied out the fonts that I added and reinstalled PS7 but to no avail. One thing I didn't try is resetting the Ext. Where is that folser in PS7? I also tried holding down Ctrl/Alt/Shift all that did was prompt me to erase a settings file which I did not do. I'm on Wdws 98se.

Hi,

When I had the problem, my actual method for removing the fonts was to complete format and re-install windows. Not sure if that is what has to be done or not and I'm sure you don't want to hear that, but that is what I actually did, then I only loaded in the common fonts that I needed and actually use.

Hope this helps!

Keep up to date with my 2003 NHL Playoffs Wallpaper

I just went back in to WDWS/Fonts and reduced the number/font types exactly to what they were before and all is well. Now my next question is how do you or can you add fonts for PhotoShop?

Consider a type management utility.

Even though PostScript fonts are supported in XP and OSX, I use Adobe Type Manager and Font Reserve to create font sets. Activate sets as you need them.
