I am using photoshop 6 and it frequently locks up on me while I am using it. It almost always locks up (or freezes)
when I shut it down and it is exporting clipboard. I have a gig processor and 300+ ram, so I know I have plenty. Is there a setting that I could change within the program preferences? Photoshop seem to be the only program that does that. It is frustating to be in the middle of a project and have the screen freeze up and have to repeatedly restart the computer. If it is not a setting problem, I would welcome any other suggestions.

You have all been very helpful with other queries.

I had a simalar problem when working with big images (Hi-Res). About 2 months ago my computer would lock up and claim that it didn't have enough ram...
Then I started getting scratch disk errors.

The only thing I found to solve the problem was buying a new hard drive and setting it up as the second scratch disk, seems to have worked up to now.... ----------------------------------------

Hi

One solution could be to purge your work regularly, especially the clipboard. The purge is under the Edit menu.

Or change your general settings with the clipboard exporting. Disable clipboard export.

Anyway purging your file regularly helps photoshop to manage it's ram much better.

what os are u using ??

I am on 2000 pro and I had a similar problem.

check what is running in the background, if that fails I would check: edit, preferences, mem & img cache.

failing that a few kicks might help

There are two solutions: Go into Preferences in your Scratch Disk and set up First, Second, Third, Fourth as: First is Startup, Second is C:, Third is D: or whatever you have set for your drives and same for Fourth. Press OK and Control Q to exit Photoshop to save the settings.

If you are using Windows 2000:

"DISABLE YOUR ANTI-VIRUS PROGRAM WHILE USING PHOTOSHOP"

Windows 2000 and many other programs have this same problem. It's always the anti-virus program such as Norton Anti-Virus. I've hear McAfee Anti-Virus doesn't have this problem with Win 2000.

Thank you for all your responses. I did fix the problem and I would like to share it. Maybe it will help someone else.I am using an older All in Wonder Pro video card. I did not think it was important to mention, but that was the problem. I went into the ATI web site and downloaded the newest drivers and I haven't had a problem since. It was so simple once I figured it out. But it usually is.

I have the same problem all the time. 100% guaranteed anytime I use Quickmask. I have tried it on a newly installed Win98 machine and on a newly installed Win2K machine. I have a GeForce Prophet II 64MB, 128 RAM, 20GB UDMA drive. I don't think it is any of the things you mentioned causing my problem.

I am having the same problem using windows ME. I hate it. Most often Photoshop 6 locks up when chosing file, open and the thumbnails pop up. That's the end of it. Sometimes though it locks up when the program is opening.

Having plenty of harddisk space free when using photoshop (around 500 megs) will fix 80 percent of your problems, keeping all your drivers and OS patches up to date will fix the other 20%. Oh, and buying a Mac will fix 100% of your problems.

There seems to be a nasty bug in PS6 and Windows2000/XP. Seemingly random tasks cause it to reboot or lock the machine totally. Scaling a huge file down does it every time. i just formatted this machine, have 7gb available for scratch disk purposes.. is there some problem with mixing NTFS/FAT32 for scratch disks or what? Photoshop used to be the most stable app ever, now it's driving me crazy with this lock-up bullshit. oh yeah, i'm running 6.0.1 on an identical box with NT4 and it doesn't lock the machine ever.
