PhotoGallery enlarge

so I've built a photo gallery. The person i'm building it for was hoping for some kind of zoom function for the gallery other than clicking to a black page of just the photo.

I'm trying to do 2 things (the 2nd I'm not so worried about)

I need to place an enlarged version of each thumbnail. I don't know too much about site-building, but I can figure out enough to get by, this is too much tho.
I was going to use PZ3 but it's not made for galleries, and I know he made a little section about a gallery version that's not done yet.

I was thinking just a larger version to one side as you hover over each.

Second:
I was trying to figure out an easy (HA!) way to make it so that the link would lead to a page with about the same look but with a highres version of the photo (I only planned on having the thumbnail zooms be big enough to fill the extra space on the page).
The problem is that I don't know how to make a...default page? for the images to sit on without making one for each page.
Just some kinda "show photo that linked here" function.
