I've recently installed a nortel CS1000 with Nortel 1120e phones. Switchs are Cisco 3750 E model. We have set up the DHCP but when the phones go to the correct subnet (118), they are not picking up the default gateway (118.254) but are using the Phones IP address instead.

This means that they cannot communicate with the Signalling server and the phones do not work.

I'e had all the nortel optiosn checked and double check, but still nothing.

Can anyone shed any light on this please?

thanks

steve

I have never had a problem with the DHCP for our IP phones. DHCP is a fairly solid system I would double check where the phones are getting their IP's from and also check the settings on your cisco switch. If they are not getting your DG then what DG are they getting ?

Simple test. Use wireshark to capture the DHCP option that are being sent to the phone.

The phone will only do what it is told to do. Something is telling it the wrong information and the Wireshark trace will nail it down right away.

Or you can keep guessing and poking....

The problem that I have encountered is with DHCP boot on the phone firmware itself. Apparantly, there was a bad firmware at some point that required you to boot phones using Patial DHCP first (and then after you get the phone online you can change it back to Full DHCP if you have a new firmware loaded on your SS). So, another way for you to get around your DHCP issue is to set your S1 and S2 parameters by using the Patial DHCP setting(force the phone to look at the SigServ) and see if that works. You can also specify the VLAN in case your string is not working properly.
Not sure if that helps.

I think I remember seeing something like that a while ago. Never ran across that recently though (past year or 2).

Do you recall if a Product Bulletin was ever issued on that?

Not exactly sure what the problem is, but three questions: 1) What string option are you using, "Nortel-i2004-A" or "Nortel-i2004-B"? 2) What firmware are the phones? 3) How is your switch configured? I'm assuming with the 3750E you have a data vlan and a voice vlan assignment on each port. On the data vlan in your DHCP scope, do you have the option 128 string "VLAN-A:XX" with the 'XX' with the number of the voice vlan? This number is what you designated as the voice vlan in your switch.

Answers to questions: 1 and 2) In order to use the "Nortel-i2004-B" string you must have firmware version 0624C4N (Unistim 2.3) or 0624C6E (Unistim 3.0) for the 1120e phone. If you do not, the phone can only recognize the "Nortel-i2004-A" string. In order to use the 'B' string, you will need to set up the phones with the 'A' string first, get the FW update, then change to the 'B' string (If you don't have the most updated version, you will need to get it from Nortel and place it on your call server). 3) When connecting the phone for the first time, you will need to go into the network configuration menu and change the "Voice VLAN" setting to "DHCP." By default, Nortel has made this setting to "none." (So much for touch less provisioning.)

Some examles of the DHCP options:
Data vlan option 128 string: "VLAN-A:30"
Voice vlan option 128 string: "Nortel-i2004-A,10.60.224.40:4100,1,10;10.60.224.41:4100,1,10."
Use without the quotes.

Just went through all that, so hope this helps.

Thanks Guys

Answer to questions

The Phones are picking up the phones IP as the DG, all the rest of the information is correct.
We are using the line 'Nortel-i2004-a" string in Option 128 in both Data and Voice Vlans and the Vlan-32=XX. in option 144 in both VLAN options. (Don't know if this makes a difference)

Firmware was upgraded once the phone decided to use the data vlan and hence cause the site to run out of IP addresses (we fixed that one by using static IP's on one floor for the phones)

The 3750E is configured for both a data and voice vlan ports and the voice vlan is configured for the correct subnet.

The joys of having to use two vendors for one job

thanks

Steve

For the Vlan option don't forget the point at the end
"VLAN-A:30."

My opinion is the DG is given by the DHCP server. Look at the scope you created for the IP phones.

Do not use the "Nortel-i2004-a" string in the data vlan; only the "VLAN-A:30." string and set your phones voice vlan setting to 'DHCP.' Then you will have the "Nortel-i2004-a" in your voice vlan only. The "VLAN-A:30." string tells the phone to switch over to your voice vlan and from there it will acquire all of the call server information with the "Nortel-i2004-a" string. You do not need to use option 144. Also, i would make sure your DHCP scopes have the correct router ip and the subnets are separate.

Thanks for that,
My Server team "thought" it was a good idea to set the Nortel options in DHCP at the server level across all scopes.

This looks like a weekend job for testing

Steve

I know what you are talking about and that is incorrect. Also, with the 3750e, when you setup the vlan in the switch, it should correspond with what the router ip is in your DHCP scope. The router ip should be something in the same subnet of your scope. For instance, if your scope is 10.50.120.0 and your router ip should be something like 10.50.120.20.

Thanks for the assist guys,

We now have the correct DHCP working at the main site.

Now I'm having other issues at the remote site but I'll raise another post for that now.
