Phone Manager Pro | Softphone configuration

Hi,

I have Phone Manager Pro with Softphone option configured and running. The quality of the voice connection is good for the moments when one of the 2 parties on the phone talk. When nobody is talking a humming tone is heard on the "phone"line.

I tried to login to an IPO with a notebook running the Phone Manager software where the notebook was sitting in the local network right "next" to the IPO, and even now the same humming tone is heard in the background when there is no voice conversation going on.

Any suggestions on getting better quality?

It is now set on "automatic select", but I have also tried I believe it was the G729(a) 8K CS-ACELP one as suggested by our telecom provider. The other options I have is G.711 ALAW 64K, G.711 ULAW 64K and G.723.1 6K3 MP-MLQ.

The other challenge is that in order for someone in India to use the PhoneManager Pro/Softphone, the user there has to setup a VPN connection to the network where the IPO is sitting. This IPO is sitting behind an ADSL connection with NAT enabled with a Speedtouch ADSL router/modem forwarding the IPSEC ports e.g. like port 500 already to the Avaya. Now the same Speedtouch would have the route IPSEC/PPTP stuff not to the AVAYA but to another VPN server (which I have setting there) to authenticate. If I change the settings in the Speedtouch and forward all the VPN related ports to our VPN server instead of to the IPO, then my tunnel from the IPO in the Netherlands, Europe to a remote IPO of our office in Romania doesn't work anymore, so I switched back the Speedtouch configuration to its earlier settings.

At the VPN forum it was suggested I connect at a different portnumber for a VPN connection for the employee in India. I am not sure my VPN server can provide for that easily.

Another suggestion done by the telecom provider is to try out setting an IP route in the IPO specifically for the Indian user. I would have no clue as to how this works and why this would work.

A third suggestion was to get another ADSL router.

Any suggestions or help is appreciated on how to get the remote user connected to the IPO.

could you have the remote user in india vpn in to a different port e.g. 501 but use port mapping to the same vpn port on your server, e.g. 500

so in on 501 .......... to server 500
some routers support this feature but it would depend on the india going out on different port.

the ip route in ipo would just be subnet route via vpn server

Yes, in the Speedtouch I can route incoming port-ranges to another portrange inside and thus also to another internal host. But I am not aware that in the client software on the Windows computer where the VPN connection is initiated I can actually for the VPN connection to be initiated on a different port. I looked in the VPN client software on how to do this, but could not find it.

How do I do that and what kind of client setup/software do I need?

could you change the vpn type rather than usuing ipsec maybe pptp so that it is on a diffent port?

Yes, this seems to work. In the Speedtouch I could configure a PPTP Server (port 1723 TCP/UDP) and forwarded it to my VPN server. At the same time the IPSEC tunnels between the IPO's still work!

Again mr. TheTaker, you are a very smart guy!

One thing I do not understand yet is if after setting up the VPN tunnel from India all the ports needed to run the PhoneManager Pro are actually open and routed through the tunnel. Normally most of these port numbers are stopped by the Speedtouch and not forwarded to an Internal host. To say it another way: is the next step after setting up the tunnel to startup the Avaya Phone Manager Pro and connect to the IP address at the other end of the tunnel of the IPO sitting over here?

I have the licenses (demolicenses for now) already in the IPO here in NL.

i think this will be ok, once you have the vpn up, you will be inside the subnet which the ipo is sitting on. if the route is correct (india subnet/24 via vpn_server IP) then the ipo will receive requests from this and forward back to the indian office.

What do you mean? On the VPN server (which is a MacOS X Server) I have enabled IP forwarding (not NAT translation) as was suggested by some MacOS X server administrators. So I should be able to ping the IPO.

I am not sure if I have to add a route to the IPO and do not fully understand (india subnet/24). Both the VPN server and IPO are in the same class C network with IP range 192.168.x.x.

I see routes in the IPO but have no clue why they are there.

Alternatively, couldn't I use the Avaya SIP softphone and get that installed in India and provide the Indians with a SIP number here in Holland? Or would I have to still get trouble with firewalls and VPN settings? How about a Avaya’s one-X Quick Edition SIP hardphone?

I really need these people to become part of my IPO solution so we can call them internallly, have them become part of hunting groups, etc.

IPO does not support SIP handsets only trunks I'm afraid!!

so in this case packets from 10.0.0.x routed through the vpn server can be replied to from the IPO.

You could go to 12connect Dot Com they could get you a SIP number from India connected to the IP here in the Netherlands then a call goes thru the VCM of the IP500 and also it than can use all the features of the IP500.

Then in India install Avaya IP Softphones and you're done.
