I have a 4 node phone mail system version 6.4.3.2. Node 2, F drive is starting to go bad. I want to buy a third party drive as a spare for when it crashs. I can run the command hdinfo and find out it is a Seagate ST31051N 1 Gig SCSI drive. How can I find out how many hours storage are on existing drive.
Is there other info I need to know before purchase? Thanks

YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO BUY A HD OF THE SHELF, ALL PHONEMAIL DRIVES NEED TO BE FORMATED. IF YOU DON'T HAVE THE FACTORY LOGIN YUO ARE PRETTY MUCH SCREWED.

We would have a 3rd party vendor install the drive, we are just trying to provide the drive at a lesser cost. Either way is it possible to find out the amount of storage hours on the drive. Thanks

I for some reason don't have the 6.4 install manual, but the 6.3 one seems to imply that the default storage capacity is 10 hours and you can buy a higher capacity drive that does 30.

The SVI screens in the tech login of phonemail aren't as friendly as the ones you use for System Administration, but I believe it is possible to format the drive from there - just make dang good and sure you know which drive you are formatting! If you are replacing the original drive you will also have to load all the voice prompts back on there, restore your backup, etc....

I dont think you can format the HARD drive from the commands...FORMAT does the floppies (remember PM uses OS/2 not DOS; close but not close enough) The FAT tables and attributes are different for OS2 vs DOS and then there is some special file allocation done by IBM/ROLM in the firmware (remember who owned ROLM when the 2nd generation PM box came out; the first was a modification of a ACD box iirc that uses HUGE drives that requried your back to take out/put in). You can find some good sized drives already formatted from resellers....DONOT attempt to put a regular HD in there and format it. IT WONT WORK. IF you have a OS2 machine, you MAY be able to clone the current drive and that MAY work....but I have never done it...I DID clone a Norstar VM which also uses OS2...used GHOST on a PC with DOS...worked but then WINDOWS ran a chkdsk and screwed two allocations up and sure enough, the original drive would not work anymore (no space for messages, etc..It would boot).......Havent tried the GHOST image to see if it will work on another drive...I decided to stop while I was ahead.

I found the answer, log into pmail. Run the command configp. Do a list and enter through till you see Drive table. This will give you several bits of info including drive capacity. The capacity in storage hours are as follows.
extended capacity = 17 hours
high capacity = 10
standard capacity = 5
extra high capacity = 35
There is some limitations on mixing and matching different drives bur I do not know details
