I have a phaser 850 that jams in the bottom tray. This is a large capacity tray. There is no pattern to the jams. It might print a 40 page document fine then jam on a 5 page document. The paper slides up the bottom tray to the slot in the top tray and stops. The printer will then try and pick up paper from the top tray and jam.
What I have done:
Replaced the d/m clutch (this seemed to fix it for a day or two)
Replaced the pick assembly guide (the silver piece across the front was broken off)
I have visually examined all gears and they look fine. Any help, information, direction on what to look at next is appreciated.

Your post was some time ago so I'll put in my two cents in case anyone else runs into this problem they can take a look at my solution. It could be the maintenance drawer. The maintenance drawer is the black housing case that is used to hold the maintenance kit. If you pull that out, you'll notice a black plastic tab sticking out the left and right side. You want to look at the bottom of those tabs and notice if wear and tear has caused it to notch out in an L-shaped format instead of having a perfect square. I can't remember the exact reasoning behind it, but it can cause the problem. Here is the info I got from Xerox, seems like a lot of money for a black piece of plastic.
The part number for the maintenance drawer is 436-0359-01. The cost is $100.
You can order the part by calling us at 1-800-835-6100.

My 850 is still sitting in the back room, I just blew through my 2nd printhead (this one is out of warranty) and the thing only prints black, or did until this problem occured. So much for a FREE printer huh ! A replacement printhead is $1100 and $500 for the tech to install. A new tek printer can be purchased for under $1000. Go figure..

Sorry, I should have posted an update. This was a drum maintenance clutch issue. Replacing that fixed the issue.
