We recently replaced the Print Cartridge on our 790. The copies seemed lighter than before, even after running VisiCal; still, they were acceptable. Then we got the error code 009-358, which I believe has to do with the BTR 2 cam sensor. It was suggested that cleaning the sensor might solve the problem.

Without a service manual, I don't know where to look for the sensor. I did remove the Print Cartridge and vacuum the tan powder from the tube that the Cartridge interfaces with at the rear of the machine.

Would it be possible for someone to indicate how to locate this sensor and offer any tips on cleaning it?

Many thanks.

009-358 is "BTR Home Position RAP". Remove the fuser drawer (lower output tray). Look into where the fuser drawer was and at the back is a black platic tray (BTR). Pull it directly out. This tray will probably be full of waste toner. Now above where the BTR was, is the belt cleaner. There is a chrome pin on the end closest to the front of the machine. Pull this pin to the back of the machine and slide this end out. The back end should follow.
Behind these is the cam and sensor. The cam is a black half moon plastic piece on a rod and should rotate completely around. The sensor is on the bottom and has 2 wires running to it.
There are diagnositc routines to run that determine if the sensor is bad or the MWB. Bit too much info for this post and there is a steep learning curve.
I had this error and found that the bypass drawer was blocking the sensor from rotating completely.
Hope this helps.

My Xerox/Tektronix Phaser 790 runs through the start up process and then stops with an error code of 7782. This has been a good printer and i can't afford to buy another. Any idea what this means and how much it would cost to repair or is it something I can repair myself.

Phaser 790 / DocuColor 2006 Printer's: Field service notes for ERROR xx82

1.Push the Cancel Key on the printer's front Control Panel (12KB).

2.If the error message persists, turn the printer off for at least 30 seconds and remove the computer interface to
the printer (17KB) before turning the printer back on.

3.After the printer displays 'Ready', then reconnect the computer interface to the printer.

4.Use the menu keys to perform a front panel reset (under the RESETS menu).

5.If the printer redisplays the error message upon reboot, a file is likely stuck at the front of the print queue. Use the front panel RESETS menu to CLEAR LOGS AND QUEUES, which will delete all jobs in the printer disk spool.

6.If the customer is aware, have them reprint the last job which was spooled, since it may be the cause of the failure. Step 2 may need repeated to eliminate the crashing job.

7.If the customer has a print job which repeatedly causes a front-panel crash message, please capture the job as a PostScript file, and forward it on to the factory ESS team, along with configuration and job setting information on the printer. If the factory is not made aware of the crashing file, we can not look into fixing the problem.

8.The probability is that no quick workaround will exist for crashing files. Some things to try to get a crashing job to print, however: Insure that the customer is using the EFI driver provided, and not a generic PS driver (such as LaserWriter or the MS Win PS driver).

9.Custom page sizes tend to be the most common cause of crashing PS files. If possible, attempt to use the next-largest standard page size to print the job.

Note: Most XX82 front panel error messages are NOT hardware
related, but caused by a specific parint job or application. Only
after the above steps have been verified to not be the cause of
the problem, proceed with the hardware-replacement steps.

I found your reply valuable. Where did you get this info? Can I get a copy?

These are some notes I had when I worked for the big red X. What kind of info are you needing?

Hi Cultolon,

we are having the excact same error on our brave machine: Phaser 790.

Right now i was looking for the technical documentation for this printer on how to clean that lens - or are there two lenses involved?

Would there be a possibility to get these informations?

Regards - Peter/Aachen/Germany

Cultofon,
I am not looking for anything at the moment as my DC2006 is running fine but there will be a day... I have the service manual but it doesn't have the field notes and I have heard that there the big X uses an online searchable database of diagnostic tips. Would like to have access to them for the inevitable future.

DC2006User as far as I know you have to be either an ASP or SDP (which my company is) to use the database. But if you have any questions feel free to ask and I'll help however I can. Later
