First of all, I am a novice when it comes to servicing any of my own equipment, but unfortunately we don't have anyone local to call, so any help would be greatly appreciated! Our company's Phaser 780 has begun to consume the black toner cartridge very quickly. It gives no warning that the toner is low (as it normally would with the other colors), and after replacing the cartridge the error disappears and it allows you to continue to print for a few weeks until it again gives the error, Install black toner cartridge, and will not allow you to print. There is no way that we are using this much black.

Also the print outs have begun to have a horizontal faint area in the same place on each page. I don't know if these two issues are related and not sure where to go from here. Again I know very little about the interior makeup of this machine.

Thanks in Advance!

First are you using genuine Xerox toner? If you are the first place I'd start is cleaning the Auto Density sensor. If you pull the imaging unit out, it sits in the middle of the machine in front of the toners, on a bar that goes across (front to back) of the machine.

Yes, I am using Tektronix brand Toner. I tried to locate the sensor but I'm not really sure what I'm looking for. Can you give me a description? I took an air duster and sprayed off the bar in the middle (in front of the toner roll) after I pulled the imaging unit out. There was a lot of magenta toner inside there. Any other suggestions?

Also I found a guy to come and look at it but he didn't really give me any clue to what it could be. (Truth be told I don't think he knew much about the machine) He did say that the toner is 88% full and I'm sure the other one we threw out was pretty full too.
