Hello,

I need some help with a strange thing that our Phaser 7700 has started doing recently. Every page that is printed in color (does not happen with pure b&w pages), have blue smudges along the edges of the paper. I have run all the cleaning, print quality tips etc, and wasted a lot of paper/toner, and nothing has improved. The smudges are only in blue toner. I have replaced the blue toner cartridge - no change.

The smudges look like a roller problem, but I can't seem to locate the source of the problem. Can anyone tell me if its fuser problem or a transfer roller problem? I don't want to have to replace both of these expensive components if just one of them would fix the problem.

Any help is most appreciated!

Naomi.

Hi, Phelina,

I've got 4 7700s and have never experience that problem in relation to fusers. I've had it in relation to transfer rollers, when they get near the end of their life. I would suggest you do a simple test- print something that has enough cyan toner to make the blue streaks. Clean off the transfer roller with a soft cloth and ensure there is no residue of toner on it. Then print several more of the pages which produced the cyan streaks. If this stops the blue streaks for any amount of time at all (even a half a page), then the problem is the for sure the transfer roller.

There is another test which might be applicable -(you don't say how far in from the edge these streaks go or if they are intermittent, have a pattern, etc). Sometimes toner will build up along the paper path and then running a wider or thicker stock will cause the toner deposits to be picked up and create streaks at the edges. This happens when I do many copies of an item with heavy toner coverage. If this seems to be a possibility, run a few sheets of 11" wide heavy cover stock and see if this is what's happening - you'll get a noticeable increase in your blue streaks if it is.

Good luck.

This problem would not likely be caused by bias transfer Roll. The problem is most likely to be caused by the transfer belt cleaner blade requiring replacement. This can be accessed from the right hand side of the machine through the access door specifically for that purpose. If the blue or cyan smudges have little arrow like marks in them, this is definately your problem. It can also be caused by a label being stuck on the same transfer belt cleaner blade.

The next possible cause would be a drum. If you suspect a drum, which it could well be given that the problem only shows in blue, you can swap say the yellow and cyan drum and then see if the problem changes to yellow smudges. If it does you just need a new drum. If this is the case, often problem is not seen with yellow, so you can get away with it for a bit longer before needing to change drum.
Hope this helps

Hi ntxeroid

Thanks for your reply!

I did as you suggested and swapped the yellow and cyan print cartridges, and the smudges continue in yellow. Does that mean I just need a new blue print cartridge or is it the rollers that are around the print cartridge?

Sorry to be so dumb about this, but thank you for your help!

Naomi.
