I just bought a Phaser 7700 with about 15k prints. When I first fired it up, it generated pages with a lot of extra black toner. I ran the clear print smears function several times, replaced all the drums, and it started to work a little better. It would print the graphics demo page, for example, but, it would not print black type or graphics on any of the pages, such as the supplies page. It also had the strange habit of shutting off/restarting itself after 10-13 prints. Then, after printing a hundred or so pages while trying to diagnose the problem, it started generating the Error 15 Black ATC sensor error. I have tried resetting the error in the diagnostics menu, but it just recurs. Is this error 15 related to the spontaneous restarts? Any suggestions as to how to troubleshoot this printer?

Thanks,

James

It sounds as if you have a problem with the K toner clutch, also when you had too much black toner did it feel grainy? Its possible that you also have bead runout from the clutch not working.

In terms of graininess, it is hard to say. There was some speckle on the paper that seemed to have more of a texture than toner usually does.

Is there a way to verify the K clutch as the culprit using the built in diagnostics? I looked, and could not see a test specifically for the K clutch. Since the problem takes 13 or so pages to trip a reset, would a built-in test even catch it?

If it is the K clutch, would that mean replacing the developer drive assembly?

Thanks so much for your help--I wondered if there could be one cause for both problems...

There is a Xerox Service Bulletin that might help. It's SB 525 is there any way I can email it to you?
