Hi We have a problem with a b/w phaser 4400 printer that will not print duplex. It is a 4400DT so has duplex unit installed and enabled. When asked to print a duplex print job it just prints simplex with no errors at all. Any helpful suggestions gladly recieved.

If you print a configuration sheet from the front panel, does it say Phaser 4400 "DT"? Just to double check that the machine did recognize the i-button (upgrade chip) and all relevant options are enabled.

Try setting the machine to print duplex from the front panel, then print some internal pages (like the usage profile) and see if it will duplex these pages. (this to see if this is a hardware or a software issue we're dealing with)

On your computer: You might have to tell the driver that your 4400 is duplex capable, usually there's an extra tab in the driver settings were you have to tell your computer what options the printer has (duplex module, extra trays, etc).

Thanks for that.. Yes the configuration sheet does say 4400DT. It will not even print duplex from the internal 2 sided test pattern. The strange part is that it doesnt seem to know anything is wrong and just prints out 2 simplex pages without an error message or paper jam. My guess is that it is either a fault in the image processing PWB or the upgrade chip itself. The machine is being swapped out of customers premises and we will test it in workshop situation. We have already fitted a new duplex assembly on the advice of someone from FXA. Will advise through here what solves the problem.

How about printing test pages from the diagnostics menu? Does that work? (do you know how to enter diagnostics from the front panel?)

I highly doubt it will be the image processor or the duplex assy to be honest.

Hi thanks for suggestion. The machine does print in duplex from diagnostics when duplex asked for for machine test print. Printer still does not print duplex from normal menu when 2 sided print asked for. I guess first step is motor controller PWB.

Test pages from diagnostics are generated by the engine logic board (what you refer to as the motor controller), so if it DOES print from diagnostics but not from the "normal" menus, I suggest you doublecheck all your settings.

If you are sure that the settings are correct, it might indeed be worth trying another engine logic board (15 minute job to replace).

Thanks for all suggestions. Fault found to be caused by Image Processor Board. Swapped one out of another printer. Now have one on order. Regards Rob.
