I have an image I downloaded that I can't get rid of. I searched through archives and did not find a similar question being asked so here goes.
I downloaded an image and put it on my desktop to see how it would look. Later, I deleted it and have since replaced it with another desktop image. However, since then, every time I turn the computer on or off, the image appears before the desktop comes up.
For the first time in my three years of working with computers, I went into the registry. I have an idea where the file would be but I definitely didn't want to touch anything since the registry is not the place to mess around if one is not sure what one is doing. Is there any way to get rid of this image? Thanks.

The OS is Windows 98 2nd edition. The image is in MY Documents. The only files in there are JPEGS and GIFS. This one is a JPEG. Thanks for responding.

Check Display properties. What is selected under Background
and WEB?

Do a file search on that file and see where else it may be stored.

Also if it is from a bad site it may be from a virus?

The Background has the image that currently resides on my desktop and WEB has no info.
I can't do a file search because I don't know what the file was called. It wasn't a bad site, just an image I saved off the internet. I deleted it but it still comes up at start up even though it shouldn't. Thats very rude of it I must say.
thanks for your reply

Try clearing your temporary internet files. Also
go to start, run, MSCONFIG and look in the Startup and the Autoexec.bat sections. Also look at the Wallpaper= line in the [Desktop] section of the Win.ini.

Deleting the temporary internet files didn't help. I ran MSCONFIG and found a bitmap image(I think) in the Win.ini tab you spoke of.
Its contents were as follows:
Tilewallpaper=0
Wallapaperstyle=0
Wallpaper=C:\WINDOWS\APPLIC~1\MICROS~1\INTERN~1\INTERN~1.BMP

Next to each were boxes with check marks. I clicked the BMP one so as to leave the box blank and rebooted. When the computer restarted, the image was still there. I went back into Win.ini and now there are two of these BMP things, one checked and one not checked.
I have a basic understanding of computers and I have to say I really have no idea what all this means.
When I run MSCONFIG, what am I looking for and what do I do if I find what appears to be my phantom image? Do I want to click on edit? Like I said, I don't really know what all this means.

Hello to everyone. Happy New year. First day back after the Christmas break and I see that the BB is as busy as ever.

ITM, in your last post you mentioned the Win.ini file:

in the Win.ini tab you spoke of.
Its contents were as follows:
Tilewallpaper=0
Wallapaperstyle=0
Wallpaper=C:\WINDOWS\APPLIC~1\MICROS~1\INTERN~1\INTERN~1.BMP

The last line looks like the culprit. Replace C:\WINDOWS\APPLIC~1\MICROS~1\INTERN~1\INTERN~1.BMP with 0 (that's zero and not capital letter o). Remember to apply, OK and reboot.
Error! Keyboard not attached. Press F1 to continue

Go back to Display Properties,select the WEB tab,
Uncheck the line(s) below "View my active desktop as Web Page"

Then uncheck this as well.

Problem solved. Thanks!

Would you mind sharing how you fixed the problem for those of us following along.

Thanks

I ran MSCONFIG, went to the Wini.ini tab and checked the box next to the bitmap image. I don't know why it duplicated the first time I did it but when it was done the second time, it worked. Something to note, if you have different users logged on, you must go to each log on and delete. The image I was looking for was actually still hidden in computer somewhere when I logged as another user.
