Hi Guys,
Does any one remember or know how to setup the diskspace alerter in performance monitor to display a message on the server when the disk is close to full (i.e 90%)? I setup the alerter but i can't seem to figure out how to make it display the message on the server. Thanks in advance

Message appear in Eventviewer, you can make it display anywhere on the network by using Server Manager. The message will be send by Net Send.

It's fairly simple:

A. Open Performance Monitor.
B. Click View > Alert.
C. Click Options > Alert...
D. Next check Network Alert checkbox and specify ONE username, computer or group to be notified of the alert.
E. Now add the Logicaldisk object, choose Free Space counter and set the desired %age to trigger the alert for each partition. Do I need to say more...

Hi Mubashir,
I did do what you mentioned before i posted this question but it still does not display the message i know it should be displaying cause one of the partitions is close to full but it's not

Maybe this has to do somethign with it.
For the update field i have 5.000 the default value

for run program on alert
first time or everytime i selected everytime

what should go in the blank field? should that stay blank?

Thanks in advace

Aha...I must have mentioned this before, the logical and physical disk counters aren't available by default. We have to use the DiskPerf utility at the command prompt with the -Y switch to enable the logical and physical disk counters for monitoring both locally and remotely the next time the machine is rebooted. That's the point you've been missing.

The rest is what you've already done and as I outlined in my first post. Default value of 5.000 secs, IMO is an overkill. It means that you will receive 12 alert in one minute and 720 in one hour. Can you click 720 times to get to your desktop? Use atleast 60 secs.

You don't have to run any program, leave the blank field as it is.

The are some other things you must know. NT itself generates an admin alert it free space on any server partition falls below 20%. And keeps on reminding at every startup or if there's more activity on the partition until space frees up above 20%. I rely on this feature of NT.

Secondly, why diskperf is disabled by default, eh? It's very resource intensive. It puts lot of stress on the disk and the system. That's why it's not recommended in most cases.

Now if you still want to use it, go ahead with it, but don't forget to disable it once you're satisfied. Learn by doing...

Hi Mubashir,

Thanks for the info. I did do the DISKPER -Y \\SERVERNAME the one one thinng i have not done i re-booted which of course that's the problem like you mentioned. Anyhow it's been a while since i used perfmon. But the current company i'm is in a tight budget. I usually use SiteScope to monitor my servers. Any how thanks for all your help.
