has anyone ever blew out permissions on /
well i did now i can't su - root to change them back
help....and thanks in advance

Hmm... Can you perform a su without the dash?

$ su
password: xxxxxxxx
# chmod 755 /

i was able to log in from the console and am in the process of correcting my self inflicted mistake...thanks for your help

Sorry to hear about your woes, but how exactly are you restoring the permissions? Perhaps using some sort of template or another system as a guide? Just interested really as a data backup/new install/data restore might have been my first inclination!
