Hello guys

I have recently let's say, "Inherited" the role of administrator on our system and still learning the trade so to speak.

I have a couple of questions about file permission and viewing the path from a shortcut to an actual file

I have been asked to set up a folder that contains files such as .doc .xls and a .exe file

How do I create a folder on a shared drive and protect the files within that folder from being viewed but if there is a shortcut to it, allow any user to open the document (I appreciate someone could open the document and do a Save as... Etc but this is not the issue here)

If we have created a shortcut to a file within the folder we want to protect, is there any way of hiding the path to that shortcut? Again I appreciate the Save as... but the main thing here is the .exe file which is a program that the owner does not want users to see where it is stored.

I note for example when you right click on Microsoft Word or some other Microsoft program you don't actually get the path of the program.

Can anyone suggest my options? Some guidance would be appreciated.

Not possible to hide the path to the .exe thru the use of a shortcut. You could create another application that has the path to the .exe embeded in it. That would hide where the .exe lives..

Like a batch file, but if they are smart enough, they can edit the batch file and see the path being called.

Hello guys

Thank you for taking the time to reply and I welcome your comments and suggestions.

The idea of one exe with a path to the main one sounds like a good avenue to go down.

Appreciate your time.
