Permissions on Document Library

Have set up a document library with individual permissions for a select list of users. All users on this list have access to the site but the permissions assigned for the document library may be different than those for the site. For example, "user1" permissions for the site are Contributor and everything (read, modify, etc.) for the document library. When "user1" accesses a file in the library they are not permitted to update the file. Using SPS 2003. Thanks for any assist.

Is the user 1) using Office 2003 and 2) checking the document out/in?

Not all users have Office 2003 but they will be doing checkin/checkout.

More info: when "user1" opens a file and attempts to save it they are prompted to save the file under a different name. For me the Save window comes up with the SPS page format in the window.

If you don't have Office 2003, you can't do check in/out in one swell foop.

Thanks for the great links, Phil. The one thing I missed is that some users are on Win2000 and some (like I am) are on WinXP. GBBG for making something else not downward compatible.
