Hi,
I have a windows XP machine that needs to be re-installed to factory settings wiping all the data. I've taken the hard drive out, placed it in a USB caddy and have copied the majority of the documents, music etc. onto my windows 7 machine. Some files wouldn't copy giving me an error 'you require permission from S-1-5-21 .....' so I right clicked on the folder, properties, security and changed the owner to me. It took a while propagating the change down through the folders, but when it did I closed explorer and tried to copy again.

It's now telling me that I need permission from myself! I'm not quite sure how to get round it. Andybody got any ideas?

Marc

You should not only take ownership, but also grant full access permissions to yourself (and propagate them to subfolders also).

Hi Karlis,
Thanks for your reply, but I've done that and it still doesn't work. The machine is called Marc-PC and the user name is Marc. The message reads 'you require permission from Marc-PC\Marc to make changes to this file'.

I've also disabled UAC in the control panel in a futile attempt to turn it off, but to no avail.

If you download, burn, and then boot from, a live linux CD Such as Mint Linux, Windows file/folder attributes, including permissions, mean nothing and can be bypassed. Just drag from source and drop on the destination.

Can you copy from Safe Mode?

Use the Vista instructions in this to reset to default the security settings.

How do I restore security settings to the default settings?

HOW TO: Take Ownership of a File or Folder in Windows XP (or Vista)

Error Message: "Access Is Denied" When You Try to Open NTFS File System Folders

Are there any encrypted files on the XP drive? Add encrypted files to the list of possible reasons for Access Denied.

flyboytim, I thought was an excellent suggestion so I downloaded linux mint, burnt it to a CD and fired it up. Copying the files though gave me a permissioning error!

Linney, I think you might be on the correct track with the encrypted thing. I've looked at the properties of some of the files that I can't copy (it lets me copy a lot of them, but not all) and they are encrypted (they show up as green in W7). I've tried to take the encryption off, but I get access denied.

Thanks for your help so far.

Sorry, I thought it was just data, but did not read the specific problem you mention: "you require permission from S-1-5-21..."

Are these files in the recycler folder? From Microsoft(
"The Recycler folder is used only on NTFS partitions. The Recycler folder contains a Recycle Bin for each user that logs on to the computer, sorted by their security identifier (SID). "

If so you can ignore them and do not attempt to back them up.

Hi Marc,

I encountered the exactly same problem as you. Finally, I resolved it by taking the encryption off with the computer where these files had been encripted.

Thanks for your suggestions,
Howard
