I have a couple of awk scripts that are used for scientific data analysis. I am planning to release them under the GNU license. My question is, is it better to convert them to perl or not? Is Perl a more widely or more seriously used language? Also, is there a way to painlessly convert an awk script to perl?

If you wrote the scripts, I'd think that was enough, and if someone else wants to rewrite them in Perl, let 'em off

I agree with the two above completely, but if you want to try an automated script, there's one that comes with perl called a2p in the bin directory that's supposed to convert awk to perl. I've never created awk code myself, much less translated it, so I don't know how well it works, but if you think more people would find your script useful if it were in perl, you could try that and see.

a2p *will* translate your awk scripts, but you won't be able to read them very easily.
