Performance monitor to view # of message sent

Hi all I am trying to find a way to capture data that I can use to see the total number of messages sent/recieved per day. I know we can do it using the perfmon SMTP Server\Message Send Total or Receive total. My problem is as soon as I put that counter on it looks like it goes and pulls historical data. As soon as I turn it on it show something like 61000+ messages. I'm trying to find a way to turn this on and off and collect data on a daily or weekly basis. Any ideas?

Ok well Perfmon is free and with the economy right now our company is not spending money, so still looking for an answer.
