percentage based table and netscape

Yes, Netscape tends to do that and a thousand other things which IE doesn't. Personally I find absolute widths (in pixels) better.

I have never had any problems with doing tables in percentages. In fact, percentages are a necessity if you are must follow US Federal or most states' laws regarding website accessibility.

I prefer percentages because then my tables look the same width no matter what the client's resolution:

"Tables and table cells, columns, etc.: use percent values for widths and heights. A percent is a proportion of available space; otherwise the values are taken to be number of pixels, which may be too many or too few depending on the screen size. A fixed-size table cell also cannot expand if its contents expand, for instance because the user has increased the font size."

Are you mixing columns of fixed width with your percentage-based ones? You may find that a 1x1 pixel, sized to the minimum width your column needs to be will keep things together in Netscape.
