Peer to peet networking help

Hello, I have set up a peer to peer network, working with a mix of xp personal and professorial.

I just set up a common work group named church,

I have all the other computer connected but am have troubel setting up a new dell vistero, It say that its workgroup is church, however when i try to connect to the other work group computer they say " you do not have permission to assces the church server...." How do i fix this?

Is this a firewall problem, some virus scanners have hidden firewalling components which may be preventing access.

Sorry if I am misunderstanding your problem, but see if these help, or perhaps you could explain your Network in more detail (how many machines, etc.)?

There is about 5 computers i have networked all under the same workgroup, I check the firewalls setting and they were off.

on the new dell, when i try to connect to another computer in the work group

I get a message saying that that computer does not have the authority to accesses the sever.

the thing i don't understand is why it says it can't accesses the sever because i have no server.

Hope that enplanes it more.

Probably a generic type of message because of the access problems.

It may be a simple thing that you have overlooked. Are the other machines all XP, and the problem one, Vista?

On your Vista machine see if this helps. If this is your first Vista machine, then there are some sutle differences between that and XP. There are a heap of things to be set in the Network Sharing Center.

Can you Ping any other machine, can you Ping the Router, can the machine Ping itself on 127.0.0.1?

Even if firewalls are turned off, the settings that they have applied may still be in effect in the Registry. If none of the above get you going it may be necessary to uninstall any third party firewall.

You could also try "Safe Mode With Networking" and see if you can access any machines.

Not relevant to your problem but have a read of this for later use.

oh, sorry no they are all xp and i have all of the firewalls off, and i can ping the access point,

It just dons't want to share and or join the church workgroup...

Maybe it is an atheist or another religion?

Is it the SP2 firewall that is turned off, otherwise see my comments about third party firewalls and other hidden firewall components. Does the Router have any firewall?

Can the problem XP machine access the Internet?

Do you use passwords?

See what you have set in Group Policy (PRO only).

Computer Configuration / Windows Settings / Security Settings / Local Policies / User Rights Assignments

Have a look at those type of settings and set them to your needs.

Make sure Remotes are enabled in System Properties (this may be a once off requirement)

Use Search to find a computer (and if it does), place a shortcut in Network Neighborhood (not required after a shared folder is opened). The other machines might be waiting for a username and password before they allow access. It might even be necessary to have the same usernames and passwords on interconnecting machines.
