I can no longer open PDFs automatically in the browser or in Acrobat when I click on the link. I don't think it's an acrobat problem and I don't think it's a browser problem as I've done everything I can think of, checked and unchecked ever option, uninstalled and reinstalled and so much more than I want to type. Is there some sort of Active-X control that has gotten hosed? That's kind of what I'm feeling but I have no idea where that would be fixed.

Just a thought. When you removed Adobe, I assume you did it through Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs? After the reboot and before you reinstall, delete the Adobe folder from your C:\program Files. Sometimes, cfg files or ini's will not automatically get deleted. Worth a shot.

Good Luck.

So if you save the PDF to your desktop and double-click the file, it won't open in Acrobat Reader?

Had this problem recently on a client's computer. Upgraded to v 7.0 and it solved the problem.

Have you noticed that for no apparent reason PDFs start opening with Notepad and the icon changes to Notepads icon? Then if you re-associate, seems to work ok?

Carl.

I tried deleteing the Adobe Folder and that did not work. i was hoping that might finally be it. PDFs will open fine, the browser plugin just won't do its jon, nor will PDFs automatically open the way they used to. I have uninstalled everything and installed about every version of Acrobat and Acrobat Reader but none of them will work. That's why I figure there has to be something else that's messed up with the computer. And I've messed it up the same way on a secon machine trying to figure this all out.

I have not noticed PDFs opening in Notepad but I have re-associated.

Thanks for all your input!

Jeff,

Any luck on the Acrobat issue?
I'm also having the same problem with one of my pc.
Not sure what the old user did to mutilate the pc before he left. But now all new users who logged in to the pc can't open Acrobat both online and locally. Installed is Acrobat Reader v7.0.7(I believe the latest). When I tried installing or un-installing Acrobat this is the error message that I get, ERROR 1317(Atempt to create dir...) and ERROR 1326(Error getting file security). Btw, user has local Admin rights. Can't remove through Add & Remove program so I had to go through the hard way, use Windows cleaner and hack the registry remove Acrobat remnants then re-install Acrobat 7.0.7. That works.

Jeff,

If PDF's open fine outside of the browser, then at least we know Acrobat Reader is working to some extent. Perhaps a recent security update changed the behavior in some settings within Internet Explorer.

1) I would go through and set "default" security. To do so, go to Tools -> Internet Options -> Security tab. Click Internet (making sure it's highlighted), click default and then apply. This sets all activeX controls and file download settings to their defaults.

2) In Acrobat Reader, click Edit -> Preferences. On the left side click on Internet. Over to the right, you'll see the setting "Display PDF in browser". If this is checked, try unchecking it (or vice versa).

Since other users who would have the same updates aren't having this problem, I doubt it but I will check. OK no, that didn't work. And yes, I have checked and unchecked the "Display PDF in Browser" about a thousand times. Thanks!

And I've messed it up the same way on a secon machine trying to figure this all out

OK, this whole time you haven't told us everything you tried, so sorry if some of the advice you get seems repetitive.

You say you don't think the browser or Acrobat Reader is the problem, because it feels like you've tried "everything". Well if that's the case, then how did you manage to mess it up on another PC? You would think you'd remember what you changed in Windowws outside the browser and acrobat to dupicate the problem.

I wish I could be more help, but it doesn't make sense. Perhaps there is a 3rd-party utility (such as a pop-up blocker) that you've managed to install without knowing it. Perhaps you customized the other PC in a way that seems harmless, but is the source of your issue. Installing "search" toolbars in the browser can cause this (such as Yahoo! or Google's toolbar). Both come with a pop-up blocker enabled by default.

Good luck mate!

Just a thought - but sometimes when you open a PDF in the browser, don't you get the prompt that says something like "Acrobat cannot open PDF's within the browser window, do you want to fix this problem now". Maybe try running IE (or whatever browser you're using) as a user with admin rights, click on a pdf link and see if you get that prompt. I'm not too sure if maybe you need admin rights to "fix" the problem I'm talking about and therefore may only get the prompt if you have admin rights. Hope this is of some help
