PDF Separations

Is there a way to create pdf separations using the export feature in ID? If so, would anybody be nice enough to explain it me. Thanks in advance.

Try going to File menu/Print and see if Adobe PDF is in the menu for Printers. If so, select Adobe pdf as the printer and click on the Output section. Under Color select Separations. Do any necessary settings and print the pdf separations.

I'm not sure if the Adobe PDF "printer" is installed by Indesign or Acrobat so, if you don't have Acrobat, I don't know if you can do what I described above.

Adobe's virtual PDF printer is only installed by Acrobat.

A professional print provider will be able to take a composite PDF and print separations from it - - so be sure that you really need a separated PDF before wrestling with this.

If you are simply checking separations in a soft proof (and have InDesign CS1 or CS2) use the separation preview function within InDesign.

'scuse my ignorance - what's a 'composite' pdf?

A composite PDF appears as you see it will all colors on one page. The original poster is seeking a one color per page separation which is typically not needed unless the print service provider is deficient in PDF output capabilities.

You can view separated pdf files using distiller and I was asking if the export option through ID would allow you this option as well. I like to use it to save on the time of printing out your seps and wasting in house proofs. I know as a designer you should have the specs correct for seps but mistakes happen and things are over looked. Thanks for everyones advice.

Just like you would print seps to your laser printer. Choose acrobat distiller for your printer out of ID. Choose separations. Your pdf will be in seps in one pdf document.
