Hello,
I want to add a link to a PDF document to my HTML page. It seems so simple, yet for some reason it isnt working. When I preview the page and click on the link nothing happens. However, if I right-click and save the link, it works as it should. I have a Adobe Acrobat loaded on my computer and I dont usually have any problems opening PDFs, so I dont understand what the problem could be.

Any suggestions?
Thanks.

Hi bdpitta,

Did you publish the .pdf file along with your other FrontPage files.

If so, it should be a simple matter to create a standard hyperlink to the file.

Hope I have been of some help,
Micheal

Hi bdpitta,
how big is the pdf file? If it is really big it may seem like your browser is doing nothing but really it is loading the file in the background. Do you have a url I could take a llok at?

Thank you for the replies.

Maybe I should explain a bit more what I am doing....

I am creating a series of HTML pages that I plan on burning onto a CD and giving out to a customer. It is like an offline website.

I am very new to Frontpage, so I could be missing some very big steps. What I did was simply create the content I wanted for the site and then saved the pages on my local drive. I then created links to the PDFs I wanted to use which are located in the same root directory as all of the other files.

When I open the start page, I am able to traverse back and forth amongst all of the other pages, but for some reason, when I click on the links for the PDFs, nothing happens. However, strangely I am able to right-click and save the PDF. The PDFs range in size from 11KB to 500KB so I dont think that size is an issue. I also tried burning the files onto a CD and trying it on another machine with still the same results.

Hopefully it is something obvious I am missing.

Thanks again.

Hi bdpitta,
try creating the hyperlinks so that they open in a new window.
You do this by highlighting the hyperlink 'Click Here' for instance, then insert the address to the pdf file (click browse and search for the file)
Then there is a button called 'Target Frame' click this and select New Window from the options.
This will then creat a new browser window where your pdf file should appear.
Let me know how you get on with this

I tried setting the New Window option and it did not solve the problem.

When I place the cursor on the links the following info is displayed at the bottom of the browser:
File:///C:/PDFProject/PDF1.Pdf

I dont know if that is any help.

AMysticWeb mentioned that I should publish the pdfs with the other Frontpage files. I am not familiar with publishing. Does that apply to files that I plan to just keep on a CD. And if so, how would I do that?

Thank you again for all the help. This problem is so frustrating because I am probably missing something so obvious.

Hi bdpitta,
the file is not in your website. This may be the problem.
Open your website in Frontpage and create a new folder in your webiste, name it PDF.
Now COPY the pdf's you want to use on your website/CD from your C:/PDFProject/ folder to this new folder.
Now try and insert a hyperlink to the files inside your new PDF folder instead of to your C Drive.

Let me know how you get on

Just to clarify Liam's solution to your problem.

Your reference to the PDF file File:///C:/PDFProject/PDF1.Pdf
is a direct reference to a file on your own computer. Carrying on your scenario - ie. burn it to CD.
The link would look for that location on the user's C: drive rather than the CD - hence no file found.

Ok. I opened the website. Went to the Folders List. Right-clicked\New\Folder - PDFs. I then copied the PDF files into this new folder. I then created a new link on the index page pointing to one of these PDFs. But still when I preview and click the link, nothing happens. Am I missing any steps there?

Strangely, I can right-click and SaveTargetAs and that works fine. So that would indicate to me that the link is pointing in the right direction, but there must be some setting in either my browser or Adobe that will not allow the file to be opened from the link.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

HI bdpitta,
is it at all possible for you to publish the website to the internet so we could take a look? This is a strange one.

Hi bdpitta,

It sounds as if you have not published your website at all. You can check by looking in the C:/Inetpub folder on your C drive. Under there should be a list of published sites. If your site isn't there, then what you have created is a disc-based site, and a number of things won't work (eg Forms).

Make sure that your PDF file is in the PDF folder (as recoommended by Liam)and publish the site.

An alternative to publishing after doing all the work on a disc-based site, is to "create a new web" site to start with,(rather than "create a new page" or similar instruction) then anything you add to it is saved in the Inetpub folder, and should work.

Good luck!
