.pdf files fail to open with IE8 1

Links to .pdf files simply fail to open the requested files in my IE8 running on XP Home SP3. It has been the case from initial download. There was no problem with IE7.
I could revert to IE7, of course, but I wondered if others have had this problem and if there is a fix.

What application do you use to open .pdf files? You might want to repair or reinstall that application (probably Adobe Reader).

Yes I use Adobe Reader 9, which had been installed prior to IE8.
You think that reinstalling it might solve the problem? If so should I unistall it first?

Yes - you need to reinstall Reader after the IE upgrade.

Unistalling and then re-installing Adobe Reader has sorted out the problem with IE8 for me.
