Ok, so I had a PDC which i demoted to an ordinary member and I had a BDC which I promoted to the PDC. Unfortunately the original PDC held the global catalogue, so now no one in the comapny can get access to their email. How can this happen? and how can I fix it? Aye Ready....well, maybe ;)

Ok now I know how and why it's happened, but I can't find anywhere that gives me an explanation of how to go about fixing it?

Anyone!?!?! Aye Ready....well, maybe ;)

Are you running windows 2000 server or windows nt. need more info to pinpoint the problems.

Sorry, it's 2000 Server and exchange 2000 Aye Ready....well, maybe ;)

Go to Microsoft knowledge base and request articles on transferring global catalog. You can have the now bdc transfer it or you can also force the transfer, as if the PDC went down and no longer exsists.
Good Luck.

PS there is about 3 other items that should be transferred along with the Global Catalog.

You need to set up the new PDC's FSMO. They are 5 roles you need to do in new PDC (FSMO cover all 5 roles). One of the role is Global Catalog. All this roles can be change in Active Directory.

Ok what happens if the Global Catalog tick wasn't ticked on the Server that was being promoted, and the PDC was demoted?

Can I some how still copy over the Global Catalog? Aye Ready....well, maybe ;)

yay \o/ it's fixed, thanks for the help and pointers guys.

This is what I did for anyone else having a run of bad luck.

Look for knowledge base article 255504 and follow the instructions.

i'm off to the pub :) Aye Ready....well, maybe ;)
