The World of Portable Computing seems to be the fastest growing part of the industry right now...

What are your predictions on the future of this industry?

Have you ever seen the movie AntiTrust...
Is a "Synapse" world within near reach?

If so how long? (what is your predicted time frame?)

And Last but not Least what about the Security issues with all of these Wireless Technologies...
The Data just "Riding through the air" on wave frequencies, as opposed to being limited to networks of wires...
What all security issues could this lead too?
Could the wireless move turn into a move towards the end of data security?

I think the reason you see more cell-phones in Europe is that there is a more available market. The United States has ~ 31 people/sq km -- compared with 244 people/sq km in the U.K. [Numbers my calculation from data from the CIA World Fact Book, 2002] With those kinds of numbers, the investment in a cell-tower becomes a lot easier to economically justify.

Take a look sometime at what the OnStar system can do with a properly-equipped car.

Just my 2 cents worth (or should that be 2 pence? I live in the UK!? :))

Mainly - about the overtime of IT.

As much as nobody in their right mind would work for nothing if they had the choice - you have to look at the industry we are in. If a server goes down at any of the clients I service I have to be their. If not then I could have up to 500 people not being able to do their jobs.
Unfortunatly it comes with the job.

Saying that, I know many managers, financiers, and even cleaners who do extra hours to get the job done. Welcome to the world of work people! It may not be fair, but not much is in life.

As far as connectivity goes: I love my Smartphone. (Orange SPV). Its handy if there isn't a land line for my PDA as I can use GPRS, I can check my email, sync with outlook for my calendar - its great!

Saying that, there will always be a place for Laptops, although I think the Tablet will take over. Its smaller, lighter, touch screen and very portable. Just needs to be cheaper.

In my opinion there's one thing that needs to be worked on... input. The keyboard is ancient and archaic; hell it's been around for nearly 200 years.

Voice Recognition is to loud (Imagine an elevator with 15 people in it all talking commands to their portable device) and most people are too embarrassed to want to look like their talking to themselves while walking down the street. They have the technology to get neurons to grow to silicon but I doubt there are many people who'll line up to have some guy play around in their brain so they can communicate easier with their computer.

I think the next generation in input is visual recognition. They’d be wearable HUD like displays that use optical sensors to watch the direction and focus of your eyes. 90% of computing now a days is nothing but point and click so why not. We could use voice recognition for the few times we do need to type our e-mail, letters, and talk on the phone, but everything else is optical. You could have a bluetooth device that you attach to one of your teeth as a clicker.

Is it really all that far fetched?

why not use genetic manipulation to prompt the growth of a new bluetooth / wifi organ? the ultimate wireless interface....

At some point in the past couple years I saw a keyboard replacement. It was basically two oversized (stiff) gloves with 4 sensors at the tip of each finger so that each finger could make an up, down, left, or right movement.
I think I rememeber them saying that after their testing people got used to the newer way of typing they not only could type faster (no less distance for fingers to move), but they also had more keys to use...I'll have to see if I can find a link that mentions this.

oooooooOOooooohhh...I want one...

Apparently this is all technology that is in beta right now, which means that it isn't to far off...some pretty col concepts.

Apparently this is a wearable system that is less intrusive and noticeable then most that have come up. After reading both of their sample situations it looks like the system can't be to far down the road, as most of the technology looks likew it is only around the corner from things available now.

Any thoughts?

lol... here we go again...

from the link above...

I imagine that the next step will be having my computer become a part of my body.

As best put by the cartoon birds (can't remember if they were crows or vultures)...
...naw don't start dat agin... ;-)

Now we are going from the Cyber Age to the Cyborg Age...
hmmmm... doesn't that sound like fun... I just hope they get something a little more stable than windows to run the implant components;-)
