Since switching to Windows 2000, many employees are finding their PCs turned on in the morning. This isn't just one or two people, it's happening regularly to quite a few. Their boxes are definitely turned off when they leave at night, but in the morning they are on! Any ideas? Thank you.

It is possible that in the power options portion of the control panel. The power schemes are set to always on and the NIC's set to wake on LAN. This could cause the problems you are describing. If you don't have any need for advanced power management (APM) I would disable it if it is not already. Hope this helps

Thank you Cirrus. I will check the power schemes of those employees who are complaining and see if this is the case.

What kind of network adapters are being used? If it's the 3Com 3C905C-TX compat adapter this may be the cause. We had systems doing the same thing. If this is the NIC installed on these systems try the following

Install the NIC Diagnostics for the 3C905 family adapters. Once installed run the following from the run line.

c:\winnt\system32\tcaudiag -a

Select the configuration tab when the program opens. Go to the option Remote Wake up and select the option Enabled custom. When the custom option come up make sure ARP wake-up is deselected.

Save and exit. You may also want to check wake-up lan option on the BIOS of the system.

Did these systems work fine with a previous operating system?

Yikes Zaitht! That's way over my head but I am printing this out and passing it on to the network guy. (I support software but sometimes try to figure out other things the users ask me...this one is outta my league!)
