The company I work for has several mobile laboratories (box trucks) that are currently equipped with your typical desktop computer. They are crudely secured with bungee cords and/or velcro strips.

Does anyone know of any companies that manufacture computers designed specifically for moving vehicles? Ideally, the computers should be a rack-mount style with some kind of shock-absorbing mechanism.

I'd really appreciate any information.

Thanks!!

I know our local telco has really rugged laptops for this purpose - but I have no idea where they get them.

Thanks for the replies.

franklin, good link. I'll be looking into it.

As long as you don't have more than a couple of cards installed, check out Fieldworks 8000 or 8500:
The company I work for (Northrop Grumman) has used their products for memory loader verifiers for many military aircraft. They get dragged from an office, out to the flight line and plugged into an aircraft, thrown on a bench in a lab, carried through airports, etc. Very rugged design.

If you are looking for 19 inch rackmount stuff I have had good luck with ADLink Technology.
In the past two years I have bought 24 rackmount chassis (4U) and about 250 PCI cards. Track record is 2 bad backplanes, a memory stick, and 2 PCI cards. Not bad, and they were very responsive to my problems with one email per problem.

Great info and links. Thanks, everyone, for the feedback.
