on my IBM 760 XL laptop, I have created the following problem when I tried to introduce a Belkin 1.1 PCMCIA-USB card in one of the two slots:
US Robotics 28.8 Modem with X-Jack and 3Com LAN card shown twice in device manager. I know I didn't 'stop' either card before pulling it out. (Belkin directions failed to mention that) So now I have the modem listed in socket 1 & 3 and the LAN card listed in 2 & 4. or vice versa.
To make matters worse, I removed the LAN card from both sockets of the device manager. Now when I boot up, the PC asks me to insert the CD fo rthe LAN card which of course I don't have!
Yikes!
I went to MSKnowledge base... didn't get to far with that.
Any other ideas out there in the land of super smart?
thanks,
Joseph

You will need to edit the registry and remove all the enum key's then restart and install the hardware drivers again look on the knowledge base for instructions or let me know your version of windows 98/me/xp

I'll guess that the root of the problem is two copies of the PCMCIA bridge chip driver installed. Some are dual chips, but you may have the same driver installed twice for the same bridge. IO devices can also mirror at two or more addresses. I you view Device manager: Computer: properties: view resources: memory, you will see that all the devices are listed many times. This is a legacy from when IBM-PCs only used ten IO address lines. It means your CPU may see the same IO chip in 64 places.
