Hi all,

Running Win 98 system. In the device manager, I have a big yellow question mark over the 'PCI System Management Bus'.

Is this the main chipset on the motherboard? If so, am I right in thinking that i will need to reinstall the driver?

Is it simply a case of finding out the make of the Motherboard, obtaining the drivers and then reinstalling?

I have tried to look for the motherboard details but cannot find them anywhere...

any pointers in the right direction would be gratefully received!!

Regards,

Nell1

give us any numbers or codes you can find off the motherboard. This will be a help.

Yes, you are probably right that it is the chipset. Is there any other devices listed such as an "Intel 82810 PCI Bridge"? I bet not. Look on the MB for the chipset module and get the model off of it.

Hi guys, thanks for the reply!

The actual computer is on a reomte site... is there anyway I can give instructions to the user to find out the MB type? Can it be done via the control panel?

Cheers,

Yes, and no. If the correct driver is installed, the Device manager will show the chipset properties under the system portion. But, if the driver is not installed, it will only show generic data there. So, you can have them look and see. If this is a major brand PC you should be able to go to there site and get the info you need. If not then they will have to open the case to look.

I really wish I had a good answer for you. I had the same problem and tried and tried with no success, eventually I suceeded but I don't know why. This is what I did.
First I ran the installation file that I had already run, then I deleted the "PCI System Managment Bus" from system manager. Restarted windows and it reinstalled everything that it did the first time but this time it also installed the "PCI System Managment Bus". The file was "driver_chipset_intel_inf", which I downloaded from Gigabytes website from the mboard site for my mboard.
That seems too simple to me, so in the event you think it may have helped I was listening to "The Porkers" (an Aussie ska band) the song that was playing while I restarted was "Skankin Car Park Blues" and I was siting on a yellow & white stool. ;)
Hope something helped.

(I really think The Porkers had something to do with it)
