Does anyone know which proper NIC to use on a desktop machine (PCI slot) with Sniffer Pro LAN 3.5?

The documentation says "Network Associates NAI21140/UC PCI", however I haven't been able to locate this adapter so far.

Does anyone know if this is the same as the Intel 10/100 EtherExpress NIC?

Thanks!

There's a NIC provided by Network Associates which works perfectly w/ Sniffer. NAI provided for enhanced drives to this card so that you capture all the information on your network.

Upgrade to Sniffer Pro 4.5.
The NAI enhanced drivers work with the following adapter cards:

Network Associates, Inc. NAI-21140UC
Adaptec ANA-6911A/TX PCI
Adaptec ANA-6911A/TXC PCI

The Intel 10/100 cards are promiscuous -- you'll capture all the packets to other devices as long as they come down your cable (like from a hub). I don't think the card will show you Ethernet errors, however.

The enhanced drivers will only work with the NAI supported NICs which were correctly listed above by AZeemeri. These drivers allow the capturing of errored packets at physical and datalink layers of the OSI model which normal NDIS drivers will discard.

The Enhanced drivers allow Physical Layer errors to be passed beyond the NDIS layer in Windows. So that means (in today's Switched world) that the odds are against seeing much Phy errors do th the nature of the networks we see most often.

Following this logic, any NIC that runs under windows in a promiscuous mode should be able to run w/ Sniffer.

This is not a supported solution however. Sniffer Technologies might say, "yeah that can work," but they'll not help you set it up.

Does anyone know how to get an Adaptec ANA-6911a TXC working under WinME?

fastwide,

To answer your question " Does anyone know if this is the same as the Intel 10/100 EtherExpress NIC?", it is not. The NAI 21140_UC is based on the DEC 21140 chipset. Optimally, you want an adapter with the 000065 [NGC's Vendor Code] at the start of the MAC address. Since DEC was purchased by Adaptec, your best bet is to jump on Ebay and search for Sniffer Gear. As a matter of fact, here is a good buy!!!!! A Sniffer Distributed Ethernet Agent. This box looks to be at least a model 80 and may be an ET03! It has an onboard Intel Etherexpress Pro adapter as well as 2 NAI Enhanced adapters.
