pci-Express slot??????? 1

hi,
I have recently bought a hp pavillion t760 p4(ht) 3.0gh and am not to impressed by the geforce fx 5200 for gaming.
I have decided to but the [Sparkle GeForce 6600GT, 128MB, PCI-Ex16, VIVO/HDTV], however i do not know if my computer has a pci-x slot on it. I would check the site for computer specs but before i could the t760a 3.2gh has come out and i still have 2 years of warenty left and do not want to break it just to check.

Any sujestions on how to check wothout opening, thank you

Well over here it comes with PCI-E because it has a Radeon X300SE as standard. Take a look on your HP web site and check the specs for your country. HP has quick Specs for all there hardware.

Yeah thank you for your help. If they come with a x300 se you must be in australia coz thats where i am and they have updated the website to the t760a rather than the t760 and the vid card on the new one is a pci-ex card and i cant find my models specs anywhere....

Umm, you can call them! That's what that tech support warranty is all about...


At the website, you have to select your country/region first, then search on t760.

All models of the t760 appear to have an Intel 915P chipset with at least one PCI-express slot. It should not cancel your warranty to upgrade your PC, but again, you can call to get the details.

Either way, companies do make AGP versions of the GeForce 6600GT card at comparible speeds. So you're covered even if your system has AGP instead of PCI-E.

Actually come to think about it, no one made a PCI-E version of the FX5200, so you must have an AGP slot.

I agree that seems most likely that it has an AGP slot. It is very unusual for HP to make a significant change to a range without changing the model number. But it seems that the early T760s must have had an Intel 865 chipset with an AGP slot, whereas the current models have an Intel 915 with PCI-E slots.

This is not their usual pattern: as the D300 series progressed from 845 to 865 chipsets and to faster memory bus and SATA drive support, so the models went from D300 - 310 - 320. When they changed the Evo D300 series to the 915 chipset, they changed the model to the 6100 range. The case and major components remained almost identical, just the mobo changed for the 915 chipset. So making a major change to the T760 without changing the model seems a bit unusual.

however there is one thign you should know which i forgot to mention is that graphics card is integrated so there is still a free slot on it for a vid card.

Just wanted to point out that even though a system might have a PCI-e slot, that doesn't mean it doesn't also have an AGP slot. Many of the HP t760 systems I saw online had both an AGP slot and one PCI-e slot. Therefore, I don't think the early t760's used a different motherboard.
