I have just bought a new PC and want to transfer some of the data held on the old PC.
I know that I could copy the data to CD and transfer but since both PC's are running Windows XP(Home) and both PC's are 'Network Ready' is there a simple way to transfer the data without the need to purchase a £20 cable for this 1 off job. Any help would be appreciated.
Many thanks

Acrivating the network on both and buy a crossover cable to tie them together.
Share the drive on the old one and copy from the shared drive to the resident drive on the new box.
US would be $5 to $7 at most retail locations.

"without the need to purchase a £20 cable for this 1 off job"
Remove your old hard drive (take off both case side panels and remove the 4 hard drive retaining screws)

Set the jumpers on this drive to slave

Fit as slaveor master with a CDrom device on secondary IDE channel on the new PC (using the spare or used piggy back connector part way down the ribbon cable) give the drive a power plug (molex)
Start the PC
The drive should be detected (you may need to restart the PC)
Files can now be copied across.
I know all this sounds dificult but what I have described should take less than 10 minutes.
Refit drive back into old PC
It doesn't matter that the HDD is just hanging off the cable but I would just place a Video box or similar under it whilst connected, also be careful not to short or touch the circuitry.

he will have to restart the machine, I hope he switches the machine off and disconnects the power plug before he fitts the other drive or he could fry his mainbord.
