Could someone tell me the difference between PC2700 & PC3200 DDR memory, my mother board takes both, but I do n't think it can take them both at the same time?

I'm going to buy more memory, but I have PC2700 at present,
and was wondering if it was worth scraping that and going for PC3200 or just getting another stick of PC2700?

What's the difference?

What do you think?

Any suggestions?

Cheers,
Steve

The difference is the speed at which they can run. You can use both types at once but you will have to run at the lower spec.

PC2700 = DDR 333 = 333MHz
PC3200 = DDR 400 = 400MHz

If both types are installed, the slowest speed will be used.

You should go with the speed that matches your CPU's FSB (Frontside Bus). For example, if you had an Athlon XP 2800+ Barton w/ 333MHz FSB, then you would want to stay with PC2700.

If you need more help, post back with your CPU and motherboard make/model.

If you have a CPU with a 400Mhz FSB it might be worth it. If you have a 333Mhz FSB Processor, then there is not that much benefit from it.

If you do not like my post feel free to point out your opinion or my errors.

As they are both the same price just go for the faster PC3200.
The new PC3200 stick will run fine along side the slower PC2700 and at PC2700 speed but it clearly gives you better options for a future upgrade as all the later CPU's (P4 and Athlon64) are either 800 or 400 front side bus so use PC3200 or higher.

The only caution I would take to that approach is making sure you stick with the same brand.

It's fine if you really want to, but likely your next upgrade will include a new motherboard probably requiring faster memory anyway...

I have just purchased a couple of sticks of memory from E-bay.

I need to check it's compatibility with my motherboard,
to check it should work.

Before I return it to the seller as broken. I need your help...

My Motherboard is...

Win Fast K7ncr18d

Memory specs in the manual says
it supports..

184pin DIMM, DDR RAM 8mb upto 512MB
PC1600, PC2100, PC2700 & PC3200
2.5v unbuffered.

(Note I have one stick of 256MB DDR-333 CL2.5 PC2700U
in and working fine.)

The product brought was this...

a pair of
Registered Samsung PC2700 (333) 512MB DIMMS (Dual Channel)

Details from the stickers on the memory
AB64L72Q8S8B3S
ATP 512MB PC2700 ECC REG

MMS120
13112171

Chips
SAMSUNG 328
K4H560838E-TCB3

------------

I can't see why they will not work,
but my system ignores them if I put them with the working memory,

It gives out a 2 second beep then silence for
a couple of seconds then repeats
when both or just one of new sticks are in.

Please please help..
Is it dead or incompatibility...
Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Steve

Did you try either stick by itself? That means taking out the working memory, and just using either one that you just bought...

Steve, I didn't miss your comments from your previous post. The line that came before prompted me to make the suggestion of taking out the working memory during your test:
but my system ignores them if I put them with the working memory,...

It only seemed that the test you ran was with the working memory still installed.

When buying new DDR Memory:

- ALWAYS get a named brand (e.g. Kingston, Corsair, Cruical or OCX)
- ALWAYS get DDR3200 RAM. The difference in price is less than £5 between DDR2100 and DDR3200, and even if your board can't take the faster RAM, it will just run it at lower speeds. Getting DDR3200 RAM ensures upgradability.
- NEVER get two memory modules from different companies running alongside each other - and never run two memory modules together than have different specs (e.g. Different Latency).
