My machine was set up as follows
IDE controller 1 had master HDD and slave HDD
IDE controller 2 had master DVD ROM and slave CD/RW

Yesterday when I rebooted my machine it refused to restart, the power light would come on and go off repeatedly.

I took everything off the motherboard and re-attached it bit by bit.

Everything worked fine except the old master HDD and master DVD Rom - whenever I try to connect either of these the machine just doesn't power up.

I have tried various combinations of IDE controllers and different cables but they still don't work.

The slave HDD and slave CD/RW are working fine.

What could have caused this?

Thanks

James

Have you tried either in another machine?
Will the slave HDD and CD/RW work as masters?

Ok, eventually figured it out.

Got hold of another HDD and tried that - same result so the problem couldn't have been the HDD or DVD Drive, the only 2 alternatives left were the motherboard which is relatively new or the crap old 250w power supply. Bought a new 500w power supply and everything is back to normal...
