Okay, here's the deal:

Last night I went to bed with my computer left on (like every other night). I had had it upgraded relatively recently (a bit after Christmas) with a new motherboard, CPU, Video Card, and PSU. The PSU is an Ultra X-Connect 500W (the other parts are an Asus A8N-E, AMD64 3800+ and MSI 7800GT respectively).

I get up this morning, and the computer is shut down, but the monitor is still on. I attempt to turn on the machine from the front, and nothing happens. I look inside of the machine, and the motherboard LED is on, so it's acknowledging that the PSU's there and turned on at least. I press the power button again, and this time I notice that the back fan on the PSU turns a bit, about 1/8th of the way, then stops.

I have a pretty good feeling that the problem is indeed the powersupply, but I don't want to replace it if there's anything else I can do. Any suggestions?

PS: Unfortunatly, I don't have another PSU to test with, as the motherboard requires a 24pin connection, and the other powersupply doesn't have that.

try pulling the power cord, hold down the power button for says 5 secs and then try restarting (with the power cord replaced obviously ;-)

Well, the fan made it 1/4 of the way around, so that kind of worked. Unfortunatly, still no power.

usual problem with a fan turning part of a turn is something shorted causing a crowbar shutdown of the power supply.
This doesn't have anything to do with the 5v standby power that you notice, it has to do with the regular power supply.

You may want to try pulling the drive connectors and try again. If it runs to the POST display you have a drive shorted.

Okay. I tried pulling the power from each component one at a time, and each time I pulled the plug, it gave a bit more of a spin. Harddrive, CD and DVD ROMS, then Graphics Card, then fans. Once I unplugged the fans, the PSU's rear fan gave a full spin, then died.

Fun.

Try another power supply as if that one is going bad you dont want to keep testing it as some of those power supplies when they go bad are deadly to computers. Ive seen some when they go out take the entire computer. Try another power supply and see if it keeps it going. Advice when replacing a power supply make sure its a good brand and also has alot of amperage. Like on the 12volt part make sure it has at least 18 amps or more. No matter how high the amperage it will not hurt the board as componets will only pull what they need.
